  1. Hi pros, am thinking of getting a Fluval Spec 5 and making it my first marine tank. Is there anyone who can advise a step-by-step idiot's guide? I hope to get to a tank with all the bright colors of and bustling marine life! Please correct me if I'm wrong: 1. Firstly, after getting the tank, do i need to change the factory default light to get it to the marine kind of lighting which can support coral and fishes. Do i need to add anything to the default filters etc? (specs of Fluval Spec: http://ca-en.hagen.com/Aquatic/Aquariums/Starter-Kits-Desktop/10516) 2. So far my plan is to get some LR, and arag LS, with half or 1 market prawn to get the cycling started. Which test kit is a good starter kit to buy? 3. Once that is done, i will need to introduce cleaning crew first? For a 5G/19L tank, how many and what kind of cleaning crew should i introduce 4. After cleaning crew is in, do i introduce corals or fishes first? Am advised to get Hammers and Mushrooms as a starter coral as they are hardier, but the colors are duller, so am seeing if there are other brighter, more colorful corals that I can be suggested. 5. Am thinking of introducing clowns but am not sure i should due to the tank size. Thanks for your valuable inputs!
  2. Hello fellow reefers! I've recently started a 34L nano tank and I'm hoping to pick up a couple of tips from you guys. I was warned about how this hobby was a time and money suck. But one day out of nowhere, I ended up at Iwarna and bought an OF 34L IOS tank from Aunty. Now there's no turning back. I've documented my progress. This is ultimately going to be a zoa tank. DAY 1 - Live rocks (not very exciting). Here's the scape. Very nicely done up by my patient bf. I wanted to let it cycle for about a week before introducing livestock but I'm not as patient as I'd like to be. DAY 3 - Invertebrates, a clown and a wrasse. Wrapped up work and made a trip down to the only marine LFS (that I know of) open after "office hours". Bought a clownfish, a green wrasse, an RBTA, an urchin, cleaner shrimp and a 3-pack of sexy shrimp from Aquamarin. Threw in a starfish and hermit crab (originally from my bf's tank) for good measure too. Here's a sexy shrimp party that the hermit crab crashed. DAY 4 - GSP wall Got myself some GSP and BSI'd it at the back in hopes that it'll bloom into an unstoppable wall of green. Doesn't look very promising here. But I will remain optimistic. DAY 7 - Operation zoa flowerbed I decided it was time to pile in the livestock. Got myself some zoas, palys, acan, pulsing xenia, coco worm, clam, green octo coral and golden clove. Most of them here are from my bf's tank. Also, a trip down to LCK and the Pasir Ris farms can do wonders. I got a royal gramma, a couple of yumas and a one-dollar clown. I'm working towards a zoa-saturated top tier. I'll post more pictures really soon.
  3. Hey fellow reefers, Just would like to share with my newly setup mini nano (approx. 13"x8"x8"). Its about 2 months old with 1 Lawnmower Blenny, 1 Doctor Shrimp, a couple of mushrooms and polyps. Hopefully it will evolve to a great mini reef. It is the first time that I set up this small, a real challenge for myself being a novice in this arena. Any great ideas/advice from you guys is greatly appreciated. What to put? What has better chance of survival? etc... Will try my very best to update this thread.

  5. Just read that there is this new UFO looking LED lights for the nano and pico tanks up to 1.5 feet. Other than the shimmering effect of LED lights, the most noticeable feature is dimming of its white and blue lights (30 levels) and intensity setting, which allows users to digitally set it from 6,000 to 25,000k and for sunrise and sunset effect. It boasts to include high PAR lighting to grow Acropora corals too. However, at 18W, I have my reservations on its ability to keep sps and suppose it is only suitable for less light demanding corals like lps and softies. But if it's true, it's something worth rejoicing for the pico community. Apparently, it has a small footprint and is easy to mount onto the tanks too. I understand the retail price is around $170 here. Anyway, the website is shown below for your reference. http://cherrylumi.com/board/bbs/board.php?bo_table=eng_product_3
  6. Hi SRC, alot of seniors whom I have traded with online were asking me to post my tank some even doubt if I got one (some even suspect if I am a re-seller) As my tank itself have a few major crashed issues that is why I feel embarrass to post a 1/2 dead tank. Being a newbie in this hobby with only 5-6mths experience I wish to get all the guidiance & help I can get. Anyway now it looks better and I proudly present my newbie tank about 2weeks after the last minor crash. My GSP & Fiji pipe organ is still recovering from the last crash. 11. Hi guys! This is my first post and second attempt at a saltwater tank. In need of help:D Basically I just got a 10g nano tank (some china brand RM-031). Its got a filter attached to the back similar to the nano space and dymax iq series, filled with glass rings and porcelain rings for bio filtration. Also it's LED lighting is much brighter than the Dymax IQ5. I plan to keep some corals soon.. For now only have one damsel. Planning to get a clownfish. My damsel seems to be doing fine, I get my saltwater from a lfs and cycled my tank for about one week with love rock. Please kind souls, help me answer these questions.. 1) do I need a skimmer?(due to the size of the tank, I think the dymax IQ slimmer would do fine..BUT I CABT FIND IT AT ANY LFS ALL OUT OF STOCK:( 2) what kind of corals can I keep( easiest to care for using only LED)? 3) must my LED lights be on 24/7 to keep corals? Thanks

  13. Hi all, Just to share my 2 weeks old bare bottom nano reef 'adventure'. Had a RowaPhos accident 1.5 months back and my previous nano reef tank (45cmx30cmx30cm) looked really bad, everything covered with fine RowaPhos dust (rusty color). Although the corals didn't seem to be affected by the rowaphos dust, the sight is not pretty. Have to teardown the system and down a complete scrub down of the live rocks and corals. Didn't do the sand as it is too messy. The photo below is the reef tank after the scrub down, still not good as I dare not to scrub the coral too hard in case of damaging them. The before sight is too upsetting for me to take any photos. For those who are not familiar with RowaPhos, this happens when the current flow in the FR is too strong. Made the mistake when I switch from putting bio-pellets to RowaPhos - it would have been arrested with a good post filter but it overwhelm my tiny DIY overhead filter (check my DIY 3-in-1 filter). Happened to chanced upon a square base nano tank (38cmx38cmx43cm) and decided to restart with a bare bottom nano reef. Also decided to DIY another bigger filter system with the hind sight of the RowaPhos accident. Here's the new bare bottom tank. I think it is still cycling but the cyno-algae is not too bad. You can see some of them on the glass because they are out of reach of my glass cleaner. Need to reach inside to clean. The ugly tube was 'necessary as that's the outlet for my powerhead to my FR, chiller and overhead filter. Kept it in the middle as I wanted to keep the side expose for easy glass cleaning. Hope that it will be encrusted with coraline algae in time to come - am seeing a few white patches forming, I believe they are signs of coraline algae growing. Am having a strong current flow within the tank with a 5000L wave maker. The great thing about it is it keep the light detritus in motion and move it to a dead spot for easy siphoning. The down side is the need to properly secure the rocks as it is so powerful that small coral or rocks can be blown off. Once you get the right placement, then it is a breeze. Discovered an unintentional 'benefit' - I no longer worry about small pieces of coral dropping into the cracks as the strong current will usually bring them to the front. Read somewhere that a reefer uses slate to mount coral in his bare bottom eco-reef zero tank, which gave me the idea to use slate to stick my zoanthid frags. Works well and fit nicely near the outlet of the 5000L wave maker (the 'cave' on the left). Surprisingly, the frags open up well despite the strong current. One thing to note for those thinking of going bare bottom is the scaping. It too me a lot of time building the scape as the bottom is smooth and rocks and coral does not have very good hold. I didn't use any putty to hold the rock together but I guess it will be easier if it is used. I had a major rock slide in the first week and another due to 'itchy' hands. The axiom "When it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies. Well, have finally settle with this look and resisting those itchy hands... tough. Here's a photo of my entire nano-reef setup and the specs below: tank - 38cm x 38 cm x43 cm Light - 1 x 18W Beamworks LED - 1 x 11W Aquazonic LED Chiller - 1 x Halea 150 set at 27C FR - 1 x Biohome - 1 x Rowa Phos Filter - DIY 3-tiers Filter (filter wool, carbon, nutrifying bateria pad), with a refugium at the bottom of filter. Have not start the refugium as yet. Currently using it to keep macro algae (sea lettuce) as nutrient export. Skimmer - Nano-skimmer Wavemaker - 1 x 5000L wavemaker 'Return pump' - 1 x 3500L submersible pump The tank is almost full and am reserving some small spaces for nice coral frags. No sure if the light is sufficient but the acropora is doing not too bad as the tips are coloring up from the time I bought it. Am considering higher power lights. Hope the sharing is useful for you. Your comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Raiden
