  1. Brian Blank of Reefbuilders - 21 Feb 2018 Chances are you’ve read a post or two here on Skimz Singapore and you’d recognize the clean white and orange details on the company’s products, but what about looking Behind the Brand and learn a bit more about the company. Reef Builders Behind the Brand is a new series that takes a closer look at the people behind the companies we cover. Skimz was founded in early 2003 by John Ong, who is currently the company’s CEO and managing director. Like many of us, John got the bug early starting in the marine aquarium hobby when he was just 13 and this journey eventually led him to open a marine aquarium shop in Singapore. “I started AquaMarin Aquatic Pets in 2002 and at that time it was really hard to find good protein skimmers in the market with limited budget,” said John. “There are only few skimmer brands to choose from and mostly are limewood air stone skimmers.” That led him to build the company’s first product, a Becket protein skimmer. Today Skimz makes skimmers for commercial and hobby applications along over 40 other products including reactors (macroalgae, biopellet, calcium, nitrate and zeolith), sumps, media (Carbon, calcium media, biopellet, Sulphur, phosphate remover), salt mixes, commercial and hobby-grade circulation pumps (AC and DC) along with various other items. “I don’t like to do just the things I like to do,” he added. “I like to do things that cause the brand to succeed.” With the broad selection of products, the Skimz protein skimmer continues to be their top selling products. Not content with sitting back on their laurels, John and team have continually refined the design incorporating innovative features while offering what John refers to as “high quality products at modest prices.” We asked John what product he was most proud of and his answer was the oval protein skimmer. The same Skimz oval protein skimmer we caught firsthand at Aquarama in 2013. This was introduced well into the cone skimmer phase, when everyone was jumping in. Skimz took this in a slightly different direction giving the same performance as a cone, but with a modified footprint that provided some space-saving attributes. The most exciting part of the hobby for John was winning the Grand Champion Marine Tank competition at Aquarama in 2009, 2011 and 2013. But not everything is perfect in this business and sometimes the biggest business lessons come with a steep price tag. For Skimz, it was putting trust in the wrong person to manage his factory and take care of paying bills. That person ended up stealing over $250,000 from the company. Despite a setback like this, Skimz is going strong with 100 employees and plans to introduce more products in the aquaculture arena in the next year. Skimz doesn’t manage direct sales or retail, preferring to sell through its global network of distributors.
  2. Reefbuilders – BRIAN BLANK Skimz recently introduced its Skimz Dosing Liquid Containers (DLC) series with a three and four chamber version with color coded silicon tubing to make keeping it organized a bit easier. The Skimz DLC3 and Skimz DLC4 both feature the touches we’ve come to expect with Skimz’s products — a clean look, white accents and some nice handy details that let you know they really thought it out. Each of the Skimz DLC has the same size and footprint measuring in at 9 3/8 x 6 1/2 x 12 3/8 in. and holds 6 liters of fluid, but the difference is if you want a three or four-chamber design. The Skimz DLC also has a handle to be able to grab it to pull it out for a good cleaning or maintenance. Each chamber has a color-coded label – Calcium, Magnesium, kH and Salt NaCl-Free – with a corresponding colored silicon tubing to easily identify each dosing component. Skimz also sells tubing in 2m, 4m and 8m packaging. The tubing slips over a nipple fitting that pulls the mixture up from the bottom of chamber through rigid tubing securely attached to the DLC. In front of each chamber is a tube holder cutout to help keep the tubing in place. Another nice touch of the Skimz DLC3 and DLC4 is what they dub their “slide and pour” tops. Each chamber top features an oval cutout with one portion open to the container. It is sealed with a shorter oval cutout allowing you to slide it back to access the chamber filling hole and easily slide it back to cover it. These are also pretty affordable with the Skimz DLC3 retailing for S$75 SGD (around $56 USD) and the SkimzDLC4 retails for S$79 SGD (around $59 USD). 3. Reefbuilders - Brian Blank 12 July 2017 We saw the Skimz MBR127 macroalgae reactor last year and were impressed. We were also curious when we read over a 30-day review of the reactor in action and thought it would be fun to put the snapshots in motion and share the overall results. First off, if you recall the Skimz MBR127 Macroalgae Biosorption Reactor is the smaller of two options that feature a blend of white, red and blue LEDs to grow the macroalgae. The lights wrap around a tube that houses the macroalgae and a small feed pump pushes water through. Skimz notes 12 hours is sufficient for growing macro algae and the reactor runs on a reverse cycle than the main lights. The test uses Chaetomorpha the typical macroalgae you’d probably want to run in here with the goal to grow enough to absorb excess nutrients while hosting and growing amphipods and copepods. The test stared with a 1 in. seeding of chaeto in both chambers. After about 5 days, there was good growth with about 1/2 in. growth in the top and 1 in. growth in the lower chambers. The same result of doubling the size happened after 11 days and saw about 1 in. growth in each chamber every week and copepods and amphipods were noticed breeding after about 2 weeks. After the 30 days, both sides were growing well with the bottom chamber slightly more dense. For optimum results, they recommend shutting the reactor down and removing about a third of the chaeto. Pretty good results and for those who’ve run these before know, a pretty efficient way to grow macroalgae. 4. The new Skimz Leopard submersible pumps are quiet pump built with the harsh saltwater environment in mind. The Skimz Leopard pump is based on an Italian Askoll motor block to be durable, energy efficient and quiet. This pump line features five models ranging from the Skimz L60 Leopard that moves 6000 l/hr (about 1500 GPH) at 65W to the Skimz L160 Leopard that pushed 16,000 l/hr (about 4225 GPH) at 155W. Each pump features saltwater resistant titanium screws and parabolic rubber vibration reducing rubber feet. The AC pumps are plumbed in using schedule 80 PVC connections or DIN hose fittings on the inlet and outlet. Despite sharing the same name as the Skimz Leopard line of DC protein skimmers, the Skimz Leopard pumps are AC making them a good option for return pumps where you want a consistent flow from a powerful pump. As far as we know, the pumps are a new addition and should be available shortly. Although we don’t have any pricing on these, Skimz usually falls in line with other similar mid-priced pumps. For more information: Skimz debuts quiet, submersible Skimz Leopard pumps
  5. QuietEco QE3.0 Pump The Skimz QuietEco pumps are a new line of submersible circulation pumps by the Singapore-based company. Designed to be affordable and energy efficient, the pump range has options for flow rates from 600 to 4,000 liters per hour. All six ceramic shaft pumps feature adjustable flow control, adapters to connect flexible hoses on barbed fittings and come with a one-year warranty. Skimz QuietEco aquarium pump has six different models: QE0.6, QE0.8, QE1.2, QE2.0, QE3.0, QE4.0 and range in price from around $10 USD to $45 USD. The smallest pump, the Skimz QE 0.6, consumes 12 watts of power and the largest, the Skimz QE 4.0 uses 75W. For more infomation: Reefbuilders – New Skimz QuietEco pumps come in six sizes
  6. Reefbuilders – Brian Blank The QuietPro DC pump is the latest pump from the Singapore manufacturer. Touting all the benefits of a DC pump, the Skimz QuietPro delivers energy savings of up to 50%, all for an approachable price tag. Designed with the saltwater aquarium in mind, the QuietPro is a variable speed controllable pump with a high flow rate that uses brushless DC (BLDC) 6-pole synchronous motors for a nearly noise-free operation. This allows for torque at a more constant thrust per revolution of the rotor. It also features a ceramic shaft to extend the life of the pump and motor. The QuietPro allows you to adjust the speed to fit your needs. It also has a slow start-up mode and automatic power-off protection mode. The slow startup mode builds speed up gradually when power is applied, getting up to the desired speed in about 20 seconds. As a safety check, if the pump detects no water or if the inlet gets blocked with debris, the pump automatically enables is power-off protection mode. Here is a rundown of the QuietPro functions: Variable speed – range from 5 – 100% Soft startup – prevent excess wear on motor and impeller assembly Shut-off blocks – automatic restart after 10 seconds (power off after 10 times) Dry run – automatic restart after 2 minutes (power off after 10 times) Memory module – in case of power failure, re-identification of the last set speed Feed mode – disable pump for 10 minutes. LED display – Wattage and speed settings There are currently five models that push out 1,200 to 9,000 liters per hour. The smallest pump Skimz QP1.2 retails around $5o USD and the largest pump QP9.0 retails for around $100.
  7. Reefbuilders – Brian Blank Skimz added another product to its line with the new Skimz Pur CARB-08 activated carbon. So what makes the Skimz carbon unique in a sea of other carbon options? It looks like Skimz looked for a clean, efficient option to ensure your activated carbon does as much as it can for you. Pur CARB-08 gets its name for the 0.8mm pellet size. These pellets are made from carbon that is activated at a high temperature with steam for a high quality and porous product. In fact, the highly-porous surface is guaranteed to have 1,225 square meters of surface area per gram of carbon (average for activated carbon in general is 1,000 sq. meters). Skimz also notes the product is low in ash and high up there on the hardness scale so it should be able to withstand some tumbling without breaking up. Skims Pur CARB-08 comes in three sizes a 680ml, a 1,500ml and a 4,000ml container that retail for around 9.00 SGD, 18.00 SDG and 42.00 SDG (around $7, $13 and $30 USD) respectively.
  8. Brian Blank – Reefbuilders Skimz has launched a new space-saving Skimz Piramid protein skimmer for people want a smaller protein skimmer without sacrificing power by slimming down the width by up to 36% over previous designs. Powering the new Skimz Piramid is the new R14 TinyAir bubble plate with a ratio of 4-to-1 of fine holes to coarse holes to increase production of fine bubbles to increase efficiency. As the company notes the smaller the bubble, the greater will be the surface area for attraction of the organic waste. Smaller bubbles have advantages, they rise slower for a longer dwell time and with the same volume of air, smaller bubbles increase surface area to help attract organic waste. Besides the cone shape and R14 TinyAir bubble place, the new Skimz Piramid sports a semi-pipeless design and a micro-adjustable valve. Powering the skimmer is a DC pinwheel motor that has six preset settings and a feeding mode shutoff timer. The new Skimz Piramid comes in five different sized models the SP187, SP207, SP257 and SP287. Monzter vs. Piramid Series (Pct. 16. June 1, Jake Adams – Reefbuilders The Skimz Octo protein skimmers are the annual new-skimmer introduction for the venerable Singaporean brand. The Skimz Octo are generally the same as the Skimz Monzter protein skimmer, with a semi-cone body, a full bubble plate diffuser, bayonette fitting removable neck and skimmer cup, but it does offer some very real refinements. Most notable for the Skimz Octo protein skimmer, is the use of the Messner needle wheel powerhead pump, the first and only such protein skimmer to use them. Messner is best known for producing high performing water pumps for pond applications with large motors in Germany. In a strange reversal of trends, while some German skimmers are using Chinese pumps, the Skimz Octo is the first Chinese/Singaporean skimmer to use a German water pump. The Messner pumps, like any good German-made aquarium device, are a highly refined AC motor aquarium water pump with extremely tight tolerances. Just looking at the Messner pumps you can tell that they are not cheaply made, with much thicker plastic and epoxy resin potting to the internals, and the advanced design gives the Messner pumps a very high efficiency with very low noise. The Messner needle wheel pumps are particularly well suited to protein skimmer applications as they spin at high RPMs creating a very fine air-water mixture which is evident to see in the operation of the dual pump Skimz Octo protein skimmer pictured below. Other improvements to the Skimz Octo protein skimmers is a new, dual-chambered air silencer which is now fully serviceable, and further reduces noise. Skimz will be offering the new Skimz Octo line of German-powered protein skimmers in four sizes, and they should become available in the U.S. through Bulk Reef Supply when the skimmers are in full production.
