5-in-1 coral food should have a seal and should be milky green in colour. It shouldn't be black. I use it frequently. Overdosing will never kill the fishes immediately like what you have described. Over feeding of coral food should just cause nutrient increase in tank, and maybe algae bloom a few days/ a week later. never heard of feeding normal coral food and immediately fishes come rushing to the surface for air and then die.

Most likely if the food is black in colour, something is wrong (food turned bad?). My advise is stop using the "black" solution and clarify with the LFS u bought from.

Thanks, didn't think of verifying with the LFS at that point in time and threw the entire bottle the moment when i suspected it is due to the 5in1 coral food.... regreted now. Anyway a lesson learnt too. just hope that my corals are able to survive the disaster/mistake..

If its black, then it is likely to be contaminated. I have a bottle with me for abt 2 yrs liao... still ok in the fridge and colour is dirty green. It shld also have a seal on the bottle opening.

However, the way you describe the swiftness of the deaths, looks more like poison then plain Jane contamination.

Does the bottles usually indicate expiry date? I am using Brightwell Aquatics but it does not says when it expires. Kinda worries me now

Like to find out if it is necessary to fridge coral food which did not indicate requirement of placing in the fridge after 1st use eg Kent invert coral food.

I think it would be safer to put in fridge for in case it turn bad?

My condolences.

Anyway my 2 cents on coral feeding is that it's quite unnecessary. In fact, feeding them

with lugols and fish pellets are enough to get them fat and healthy (:

Maybe this might help to avert a future disaster?

Happy Reefing,

Marc J.
