I found a lot of post wriiten in high level SMS language which is a

drain to some of us older folks who Seldom use SMSish. I would

encourage less use of that and more of basic English. International

friends will understand as well.

its a matter of learning the tricks of the trade.. FYI "SMSish" is mostly derived from online chats like ICO, IRC, etc.. its sort of an Internet language already.. In fact, what most type are not really 'SMSish".. "SMSish" is much more difficult to understand :P.

BTW I have a friend's Australian friend who knows Singlish pretty well and when he comes over, he tries to even use Singlish to speak to locals. Doesn't mean that if we use Singlish, we will become some "low class" people.. I find it as an identity..

But What I hate most is leet... 1t'5 muCH w0r5t & 1T'5 bAd f0R th3 3y3S & Bra1N...

Why do we use "My 2 cents worth" when 1 cents are not legal tender in Singapore anymore? Shouldn't it be 5 cents worth?

Tuan, speaking Singlish is a fine art... learning it is not easy... ;)

You have to learn how to eat durians, chee chong fun, laksa, rojak, drink kopi-o, teh tahrik, tiger beer, watch Phua Chu Kang and Channel 8 for about 5 years before you can catch the lingo...!!!!

Most of us can converse & write in proper Queen's english.... but we prefer our colloquial language, Singlish, universal to all Singaporeans... whether we be from the mainly chinese, eurasian, malay or indian ethnic groups! ;)

Lah... is similar to Loh. Used to accentuate or emphasise a point or end a sentence.... like 'you're real good, man!' aka 'you're real good, lah!'. ;)

Let's see...

eat durians.... checked, love it! What's that road where there's durians sold all year round again.. we seek it out every time we visit and have been spotted sitting outside eating a whole fruit each! :o

chee chong fun... checked

laksa... checked

rojak... checked

tiger beer... checked, hic!

drink kopi-o, teh tahrik, watch Phua Chu Kang and Channel 8 are my only failings then! :)

Though I'm not very good at languages, I do love local customs and feel it's only polite (which is v. important) to follow rather than expecting anybody else to speak "Queen's English". Don't even think the Queen speaks "Queen's English".

TBH, the standard of English here is quite high in comparision to my 'native' BB.

how so true. Why must we follow other people's 'customs' but not let others follow ours? ..

we go to their country and try to speak like them and their slang. They come to our country and we still speak like them?!... absurd.. are we so inferior?!

Why do we use "My 2 cents worth" when 1 cents are not legal tender in Singapore anymore? Shouldn't it be 5 cents worth?

singlish is our special way of speaking english wat....

just like english in england is diff from US, chinese in China is diff from Taiwan....

it's how we evolved english while maintaining racial harmony in singapore....

btw, english is an adoption from sanskrit language which originates from India n japanese is an adoption from english, chinese, french, etc. ;)

therefore, i wld say it's adopt, adapt n modify of the languages of our major races here to become a special language called singlish... B)

I thought all languages originated from the Tower of Babel? ;)

Nah... I think the first language is monkey talk.

Definitely not sanskrit... it's a highly evolved language already, unless there is evidence humans started from that place of origin.

If we humans did come from Africa... it wasn't sanskrit that was the first language.

hmm... no idea where the first language came from.... :heh:

but if i din rem wrongly from my history textbk in my sec sch days, it did suggest that alphabets from the west was adopted from sanskrit :pirate:

but seriously, it's hard to determine how n where pple in the past adopt their languages from :D

even now, the languages r still adopting from other languages... for example, hackers in english hav been adopted as "Hai Ke" in chinese, alamak in malay hav been adopted by the japs....

the main thing is that i dun feel anything wrong with having our own subclass of unique language that hav evolved due to difference in culture n race ;)

to borrow a phrase that my bimbotic friends use, tak glam to speak singrish.

I wonder what is the ruckus and hoohaa when it comes to this. its not half as bad as the pidgin english we speak, which is a deadly mix with chinese and hokkien. oh wait. you call that singlish? damn.

then why aren't we complaining about the scousers/mancunians/northern folks when we go to England?

long of the short of it, nothing will make me drop Singlish. its easier to converse in it, and much easier to get to the point when you're talking to people. don't need to beat around the bush. I think TalkingCock.com will agree.

long live TalkingCock and Singrish.

although I will live for the day Singrish is accepted by the Gahmen.
