Let me check with u guys.

Coz I have a 2 tier fresh water tank n I intend to have a sump filtration system yet dun wanna drill holes on tank to create the overflow.

Can I use this method?

My main concern is,when the return pump fails, stops etc... Will the over flow pipe still provide water flow?

Coz I do siphon water n I understand water flow from higher level to lower level. And once starts it will not stops till it cannot contact any water then stop.

Some1 doesn't 1 2 do anything find an excuse,some1 1 2 do something find a mean!

Hi,

Please advise what pipe size and pump capacity that I should use for my tank?

1. It's 120 x 50 x 50 cm (300 liter)

2. The height between the top of the aquarium and the base of the sump is about 140 cm

TIA :)

It depends on the return pump.

I started off with 13mm pipes that served me well for a 1800 l/hr and below return pump. Ever since I switched to a 2000 l/hr pump, the overflow pipe could not catchup, thus I have to limit the return pump.

I did not factor in headloss, so that was just an estimate.

A 20mm pipe should be able to sustain a 2400-2500 l/hr flow without an issue, possibility 3000 l/hr.

Looking at your tank 120x50x50, the width isn't much for scaping either, neither can you put in a too fast flowing pump that will drive your tank into a whirlpool if you are only having one outlet. You might consider a pump that is about 2500l/hr and have wavemaker that helps drive it.

Ic. I plan to use 2500 liter/hour pump but at 140 cm head, it'll give around 1000 liter/hour (according to its graphic).

For the safe side, I'd better try at least 20 mm pipe then so my sump is never empty and the main tank never gets flooded.

Thx a lot!

I've always wonder where to buy one of those pretty CS overflow boxes locally. Anyone with a clue please?

Quite a number of LFS sell those, if you visit the sites of the sponsors here, they do carry them.
