The flood!

The dreaded flooding has finally occurred this morning. Siphon in the overflow broke. I suspect because my floating feeding tray got stuck in a position that created bubbles. Good thing my wife has good ears, she thought it was raining. Sigh.. Anyone else got similar experience? Any alarm device available anywhere?

Ouch. Which overflow are you using?

I have one of these which I bought the last time I was in USA (does not ship to SGP) : http://www.amazon.com/Glentronics-Inc-BWD-HWA-Basement-Watchdog/dp/B000JOK11K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1414106545&sr=8-1&keywords=water+leak+alarm

Here is one that does : http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-RWD21-Water-Leak-Alarm/dp/B00BIBD4EY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1414106545&sr=8-3&keywords=water+leak+alarm

Have you thought of preventive measures instead of detection? (eg. float switch to switch off the return pump)

I had flooding happened in my IOS tank a few days back. Water passage between compartments within the IOS got blocked by my skimmer accidentally and water can't flow to the return pump chamber. End up return pump emptied that entire chamber into my DIsplay area and flooded the tank.

* I got a 20L IOS compartment. Lol!

Painful experience.

Whatif no one at home..i have the similar experience 1mth back and I get into this hobby only abt 2- 3 mths. The reason for flood is due to a snail go into the pipe which block the water returning to sump...so it keeping pumping water to tank from sump till it flooded my hse..my wife say one more time flood pls quit this hobby..:-P

Hahaha! I think my wife met your wife. Now my wife super sensitive to the sound of water for fear of an overflow again.

I only protected my overflow system from electrical trip that that would be the more common problem. Currently researching into overflow prevention measures. Anyone with tips?

Can anyone give some advice on installing float switches? What do I install the float switch to? Do I connect the wires of the float switch to part of the electrical wire that powers the pump? Not very good at electrics. Most of the setups involve some kind of soldering.... Beyond me.

I've not seen any commercially available electrical shut off device yet. Conceptually, it is possible to link it to a float switch but a relay is needed. Not seen a comprehensive DIY yet though.

Personally, I have a water alarm from amazon.com. Just do a search on water leak alarm. Some models do ship to SGP.

This is a reasonably priced one from ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hi-Quality-Water-Leak-Sensor-Level-Alert-Alarm-Detector-Monitor-Home-Security-/161399410237?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2594278e3d

Bro, bad stories abt Apex in your post happened in 2010 & 2012. Apex has updated their firmware time to time. Thus so far with the latest firmware, there is no issue which I'm using it. I'm using Apex for almost 1 year and never encounter the issue. It's good and easy to use device.

Just my 2 cents worth to share.

For overflow float you can add another overflow at a higher height.

So if the first overflow is block the second one can take over

But for return I think you can use the ATO is reverse concept.

I not sure it work practically. In theory it should work

6.5 * 2 * 2 + 3.75 * 1.5 *1.5,(Decomn on 14/9/08)
4*2*2 + 2.5*1.25*1.25 (Decomn on 1/8/09)
5*2*2 (Fully LED light system, 140 3 watt SSC leds with 60 degree lens)(Decomm)
2.5*2*2(Fully LED Light System,96 3 watt SSC leds with 60 degree lens)(Decomm)

5*2.5*2(LED only)

Eheim return 1 * pump

1 HP Daikin compressor with cooling coil
2 Jebao OW40, 1 ecotech MP40,
1X6085 Tunze wm,

1 CURVE 7 Skimmer

1 DIY 80 led control by Bluefish mini

1 radion XR30W G2, 2 Radion XR15G3

Sump area lite by 5 ft T5 , 6 * SSC 3 watt red LED for refugium

1 Full spectrum E27 led light

1 CR control by bubble count

Start No Water Change since 1st Dec 2016

Add new 2.5x2x 1.5 ft

Ya I agree to have 2 floats at overflow, just to play safe
