SRC Member PowderTang Posted January 6, 2015 SRC Member Share Posted January 6, 2015 Hi Realized that my magnesium have been dropping pretty fast Now around 1170... If I managed to increase to 1200, the next day will drop to 1170 Tank is mainly LPS.... is this normal that they use up mg pretty fast? I have been trying very hard to increase to 1300....how do I do that? I can even finish a 500ml bottle of Mg liquid within 4 days... But Mg still can't be raised... Always hovering 1150-1200... Thanks
SRC Member youdontnowm Posted January 6, 2015 SRC Member Share Posted January 6, 2015 How many litres is your tank ? 500ml bottle of continuum mg only raise about 100ppm of mg in my 500litres Quote | Display : 48x30x22 Skimmer : SK-201 skimz | Sump : 30x24x18 Wavemaker : 2x RW-15 , 1x RW-8 | Cooling : 1HP titanium drop in coil ATO : JBJ | Lighting : ATI Sunpower 8x54w + 48x cree xte royal blue Return : Jebao dc-6000 | Dosing : Jebao dosing pump [ CaCl2 + NaHCO3 ] Pump : | Reactor : FSZ Z160 zeolite reactor & phosban 150 | System : ZEOVIT decomm-ed : Ydkm SPS reef >><<
SRC Member PowderTang Posted January 6, 2015 Author SRC Member Share Posted January 6, 2015 About 600-700l For a 6 feet
SRC Supporter SubzeroLT Posted January 6, 2015 SRC Supporter Share Posted January 6, 2015 I had the same issue on my 3ft (200L) where Mg was hovering in the 1100+ range. I used Mg powder (Red Sea Foundation C - Mg) to raise it to 1400 over a few days. Unless the objective is to increase Mg to get rid of bryopsis where liquid Mg is used, using dry powder for Mg is cheaper. There are cheaper options but i like Red Sea products because the instructions are quite clear. If you use this product, as per label, you'll need to add : 112g x 6 (for 600L) = 672g to bring it up from 1160 to 1310ppm Quote Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/mysliceofnature/
SRC Member PowderTang Posted January 6, 2015 Author SRC Member Share Posted January 6, 2015 Great So do I add everyday or add in one shot ?
SRC Supporter SubzeroLT Posted January 6, 2015 SRC Supporter Share Posted January 6, 2015 I read that the guideline is max ~ 100ppm increase per day. So, add over a few days. Quote Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/mysliceofnature/
SRC Member Angel Keeper Posted January 6, 2015 SRC Member Share Posted January 6, 2015 I thought guideline is 10 ppm per day? Angel Keeper
SRC Supporter SubzeroLT Posted January 6, 2015 SRC Supporter Share Posted January 6, 2015 I read from here : http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2007-04/rhf/index.php Felt that 10ppm increase per day is quite slow. This will take a really long time. \ Any inputs from folks? Quote Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/mysliceofnature/
SRC Member Angel Keeper Posted January 6, 2015 SRC Member Share Posted January 6, 2015 From my understanding, general guide is 100 ppm per day. Red Sea recommends 10 ppm per day... Angel Keeper
SRC Member PowderTang Posted January 6, 2015 Author SRC Member Share Posted January 6, 2015 Ya 10ppm too slow 100ppm not so bad I'm currently using Seachem, any good reviews on that?
SRC Member Angel Keeper Posted January 6, 2015 SRC Member Share Posted January 6, 2015 My perception would be that it's not dangerous to raise by 100 ppm a day... However, Red Sea is concerned that some sensitive corals may not be able to take the huge jump in number. Thus Red Sea only recommends 10 ppm a day... SRC Member solasido Posted January 8, 2015 SRC Member Share Posted January 8, 2015 What I would try would be to keep trying to increase for a while, while observing if the culprit can be identified or it will stabilise after a while. No issue for me to increase 100ppm a day for me (using Seachem Magnesium Advantage). It is not the Mg increase of 100ppm that really matters but the other molecules bound with Magnesium for instance for Seachem, the magnesium is in crystal grains. It is in the form of Mg Chloride. It is the sudden spike of Chloride that is feared. As for Mg level, it would be just like acclimating corals from LFS with lower Mg to our tank. SRC Member woyeng** Posted January 9, 2015 SRC Member Share Posted January 9, 2015 Does the drop in kh affect mg fluctuations ? Maybe need to monitor kh for next few days corresponding with your mg readings. My previous experience is when kh is unstable, mg oso goes haywire
