kkannan114
Dear forum, i heard that that this type of macro algae can turn white and screw up the tank with nitrates and phosphates. Please tell me if this is happening and how to prevent it..
SRC Member tuajia Posted November 16, 2015 SRC Member Share Posted November 16, 2015 I had the same problem with chaeto, it turn white and died. I think my problem was having the light on 24/7. After switching a night cycle (my fuge light turns on only after my main tank light turn off) and replaced my chaeto for caulerpa instead, it seems to have solved the problem. I also make sure to dose iron and trace elements to replace lost nutrients. What are your water parameters and light type and schedule? Sent from my C6603 using Tapatalk nitrates range from 10 to 25.. Phosphates range from 0.1 to 0.25.. All else is normal. Lighting in display is on for 8 hours. Sump tank light is on for 12 hours. It's not on at the same time. I use normal fluorescent white light bulb. I just got this algae 4 days ago. Will it release all the nutrients back in the tank if it goes sexual? Should I remove it? SRC Member tuajia Posted November 16, 2015 SRC Member Share Posted November 16, 2015 Looking at the situation I suggest that you just remove the white parts first and continue monitoring the situation Sent from my C6603 using Tapatalk
SRC Member JMW Posted November 16, 2015 SRC Member Share Posted November 16, 2015 Yup agree to remove it as it will release nutrients back into the water as it disintegrates, & you won't want your tank to face a sudden influx of nitrates & phosphates.. SRC Member JMW Posted November 16, 2015 SRC Member Share Posted November 16, 2015 Btw I've read somewhere that regular pruning on caulerpa can prevent it from going sexual.. Worth a try IMO
kkannan114
Thanks for all the replies. Decided to remove it altogether. Will try Chateo. Hoping for more success with it
shaohao85
Could it be ur lights are not suitable or you have dozed some medications into the tank? I had the same problem previously and was the light tat is insufficient.
SRC Member xinde Posted November 18, 2015 SRC Member Share Posted November 18, 2015 Hmm weird, I also using simple normal 9W white bulb but I'm using chaetos and they are doing well. You can try and see if the chaetos turn white as well, if so maybe it's like what shaohao bro suggested that they may be some chemical such as medication in your water causing it.
