Chaeto Advantages and Disadvantages

Pros:
- what you mentioned(one of the faster macroalgaes for nitrate and phosphate removal)
- doesn’t “go sexual” and reproduce which causes a massive cloud of toxins in the water like many species of caulerpa(the other fast growing macroalgae)
- great refuge for microfauna(pods, brittlestars etc)

Cons:
- easily traps detritus in stagnant/Low flow areas
- can get messy at times if not bunched up(which usually doesn’t happen unless they’re dying off)

I see! I heard that it can spread parasites into the tank. Is that true?

By definition anything that has surface area for the cysts of certain parasites to attach onto in a system where they’re present has a possibility of spreading parasites hahahah. Perhaps this notion comes from the nature of chaeto having a lot of surface area in its thick curls of growth

Okay sounds compelling. But how long does it take to effect for the phosphate and nitrate removal?

Depends on the rate of photosynthesis within the chaeto. The more nutrients there are and the stronger your Lighting for them is, the faster they grow. Generally speaking

Got a bag of chaeto from LFS. Almost dumped the whole bag in. Thought it was fat amphipods. Upon close inspection, it was flat worms (tons of it). U never know what “freebies” ur going to get. Better to inspect closely.
