Can LPS feed on Live Phytoplankton only?

Hi Chaniz,

There are several articles written on food for corals, most states that hard corals be it sps or lps feed predominantly on zooplankton rather than phytoplankton.

However, most believe that by feeding phytoplankton frequently to their tank, they will increase the populations of the micro-organisms in the tank which will eventually be consummed by lps.

"Many coral reef animals such as clams and other bi-valves, soft corals, sponges and feather duster worms feed directly on phytoplankton, and even those that do not, such a most stony corals, rely ultimately on the nutrition gained from phytoplankton and other marine algae eaten by the zooplankton they feed on." www.dtplankton.com

Hi there chaniz,

could you kindly elbaroate more on the LPS corals youre referring to?

if youre thinking of sun corals and blastomussas, then i think youd be better off target feeding them with frozen mysid shrimp, which constitue zooplankton, rather than phytoplankton.

likewise, for corals such as bubbles, mysid shrimp or shrimp meat might be more appropriate, although, as AT mentioned above, phytoplankton does help feed the in-tank copepod and amphipod population.

corals like goniopora sp on the other hand, which is also an LPS, have been shown to directly absorb or ingest phytoplankton, so on the overall, phytoplankton is a useful food source in general, but possibly not enough to sustain some LPS corals such as sun corals and dendrophyllias, etc.

well... hope that helps.

cheers,

ian
