Can I use Zeolites?

Anyone using Zeolite as a filter media? I'm wondering if there will be any problem. I'm not taking about the complicated Zeovite system, just plain bag of zeolite put into my canister filter.

I understand it can absorb (not convert) ammonia right?

yes is possible. is just that it wont be as efficient.

some pple do that, and it works to a certain extent. ;)

there are zeolites for marine, the ones for freshwater will absorb calcium in preference over ammonia which will be fine for freshwater since there is no calcium inside but disastrous for marine systems since Ca is very important to our inverts. Hence must make sure zeolite used are specifically for marine use. next thing is that zeolites are better used in a reactor as you will want to control amount of ammonia absorbed as too fast absorbtion rate can cause a complete tank crash. pls read wetwebmedia for more info. my 2 cents

well, it said mostly for bacterias house. Its didnt emphasized enough details why new hobbyist failed. It also said lots of unconfirmed debates whether its OK. When first introduced, they said OK for both marine and freshwater then later changed to freshwater only due to overmount of complaints and condemns. As I know Zeolites main property is to absorb at freshwater and release everything at saltwater. After releasing everything, then it is OK to use in saltwater. I think this is what they are trying to tell us. So new tanks will crash and old tank tanks must use other means to filter out these released toxics. If this is the case, its better to let the zeolites cycle in other saltwater container for many weeks first.

You mean here your CA reactor uses saltwater with Zeolite? Pls advise.

e zeovit system uses zeolite. zeolites are some kind of mineral thingy that occurs naturally that somehow can be used to maintain our fish tanks with low ammonia, low po2 and nitrates. its great for sps but overdosing is common and dangerous... i know cos i used it before.

go zeovit.com = the sps tanks running the system are simply amazing.

i guess there must be some running for freshwater. like zip86 said, only use the right zeolites...there are around thousand over kinda zeolites out there.

as for running in reactor vs canister. the reactor allows u to pump e media but canister cant do tat so is less efficient. still works though. same with putting e media in a filter bag in the sump, works and some guys knead the material to release the "scum" whitish thingy that supposedly is good for the corals. one thing about this system is your tank will be virtually algae free. ;)

I have no plans to use the Zeovite system. Just that I came across this zeolite called Aquasorb: Activated HSCAS by Unipoint (Swiss quality product). And it is stated also suitable for salt water. Before I put it into my Canister filter for my FOWLR, I was hoping to see if anyone else have tried before.

Maybe I will be the first one to test it out?
