  2. HELP!! URGENT!! Noticed my Blue Tang stomach started to bloat 5 days ago but its still eating well, pooping and acting normal. But 3 days ago, noticed its not eating and not pooping. Now its hiding in the rocks and not eating anymore and still bloated. Its anus also looks bloated and grey color. Suspect it may have eaten a rock and got stuck ... or is it sickness? Anyone knows how to treat this?? So worry for my poor fish
  3. You can read the article on plenum by Bob Goemans. http://www.saltcorner.com/Articles/Showarticle.php?articleID=23&i=1 I setup my plenum in 2004 and its still in my tank today...after 18 yrs. Do note that plenum system is meant to tackle the nitrate issue only. However, there are still other major issues like phosphate, hardness, etc that we still need to tackle. I also diy and setup an algae turf system in 2005/6 and it is my main filtration ever since. I even retired my skimmer shortly in 2007. Algae turf can tackle both nitrate, phosphate and other nutrient issues as algae is so efficient and dynamic. Just my thoughts and sharing my experience. Cheers
  4. Thanks bro! Is Ah Beng Aquarium = PacificReef =PacificMarine? Are they the same store at 471 Geylang Rd ? i remember PacificMarine at pasir ris was quite big and had lots of live fishes. The store at Geylang looks very small.
  5. Hi. Sorry to hijack this post. Anyone know where is Pacific Marine has been relocated to? Been looking for it since pasir ris farmway 2 was closed down. Appreciate any reply. Thanks
  6. Normal KH is abt 7. Increasing CA can increase KH. But remember to test Magnesium also. Both Calsium and magnesium need to be increased in tandem to maintain KH. Many people forgot to watch out for Mg.
  7. Lorong halus. Balestier also have. Price depending on which species...around few dollar to above ten dollars. BTW, although they are called cleaner shrimp, most probably they don't do cleaning in captivity
  8. Bro Falong, Losing 2L a day is normal. The problem is your "reservoir" of 2ft x 1ft x?height is too small. Within 1 week your water level will drop to the return pump level and it will be sucking air. Suggest you enlarge your reservoir. One simple but irreversible way is to break down the first glass partition separating the lighted partition and return pump partition. When that is done, your reservoir will enlarge to almost 2ftx2ft ?ft high which is double the current reservoir. Your drop in water level will be almost half.
  9. Bro, you can collect free of charge the local version of ulva at our local beach like east coast park. Ulva are often washed ashore. You just need to sieve out the good ones and washed them up. Watch out for unwanted critters hitch hiking among the sea weed though.
  10. My fox 2000 died after 3 yrs. For me 3yrs is considered ok. current model i m using is ETC-100+
  11. Better consider again before installing check valve. Some design don't work after some time. Results will b a flooded sump tank. A simple hole drilled at close to water level of outlet pipe will b a more reliable solution.
  12. Yellow tang should normally be added last to a tank. They will dominate your tank if added first n hard to add other fishes especially other tangs
  13. You have to get marine sand from aquarium shop. Quite sure irwana, pets mart or any shop sell them. The sand comes in different coarseness graded as c1 to c4. Just go there n choose the size that suit u. My advice is dont choose too fine sand if your return pump is too strong else sand will be flying everwhere. Too coarse n debris will get stuck inside. Hope tis helps
  14. Another type of even more common brown seaweed: http://www.wildsingapore.com/wildfacts/plants/seaweed/phaeophyta/dictyota.htm
  15. The most commonly found type n love by tangs are the redish brown type: http://www.wildsingapore.com/wildfacts/plants/seaweed/rhodophyta/portieria.htm Another common type that tangs like is the green spiral leave type: http://www.wildsingapore.com/wildfacts/plants/seaweed/chlorophyta/ulva.htm and also common is the fern type but they don't seems to like: http://www.wildsingapore.com/wildfacts/plants/seaweed/chlorophyta/sertularioides/050623cjd4103m3.jpg There are also other types like the hairy green n hard white string like which they dont eat at all. Just take your time to explore our local beach n try with your fishes. Other than tang I found that clown also eat small soft chunks of seaweed. Importantly take only those seaweeds that were washed ashore n not those growing on seabed. Help to preserve our beach ecology. For example Punggol beach was once thriving with marine life, life rocks, invertebrates, coral rubble n especially mud plains filled with seaweeds n fishes. Now its totally been trampled on daily n everything gone for good.
  16. Bro kenyee. My blue tang was 1.5in when I bought it on 2 jan 2001. Its now abt 6in. During 2001 to 2009 I didn't feed too much as I was having problem with water quality. Ever since I use algae scrubber I started to feed heavily from 2011. I think size very much depend on quality n quantity of food and also how much space for them to move around. My tank is 4ft. I doubt a 6ft will make much difference compared to ocean. So are our pellet food..inferior compared to live food in ocean. If you watch documentary u can see tangs are feeding non stop. Their digestion system is quite short n inefficient. Thats why tangs need feeding constantly...n also poo so often. I used to collect live seaweed every mth during low tide for my tangs at punggol beach. Nowadays just can't have time :-( Also punggol beach is totally destroyed ecologically compared to 2002. No more seaweed. So sad.
  17. Yes my purple tang has lost its color compared to 2002 when I got it from my friend. It is also losing its eye sight. It sometimes cannot see food in front n also much slower in grabbing food. On other hand blue tang which is 13yrs old is still having solid color n super fast eat like pig n fat n playful. I had a naso same age as blue tang but passed away 3 yrs ago. Also the pair of clowns which are 10yrs old. Solid color n still laying eggs every 2 or 3 mths. I m not sure what is the lifespan of of tangs n clowns. BTW my fishes has no health issues. Only some broken fins from occasion fighting.
  18. DSB and plenum has a common flaw is that it can only reduce nitrates but not Phosphate. Algae scrubber removes both. My plenum is just a white elephant nowadays but maybe still useful for critters to breed.
  19. Have a 4in plenum ...ie its a dsb with void at bottom. Was popular in early 2000 as improvement to dsb. Popularised by Bob Goeman.
  20. You can also try collecting seaweed from changi or punggol beach. My tangs love them. See my post in another thread on collection of sea weed:
  21. Wow...this is wat I have been looking for.... not for my tangs but for my soup. Just can't find these green seaweed in ntuc or chinese medical shop. Thks for the tip!
  22. My moldy 12 years old tank with 2yrs old water n mostly 10yrs old fishes except for the butterflies which are 1 yr old
  23. Not sps lah. For sps tank micro nutrients is important. After 2 yrs some micro nutrients would have been depleted. My tank is FOWLR n some softies.
