I have already cleared all the hair algae infested corals. The tank is now really plain looking:(( Btw are turbo snails reef safe? I only have a 3g tank. Will it be big enough for the snail?

I use distilled water for top up. For change, I use tap water with the dechlorinator and salt mix

Half a year. Not sure about the levels though. It's a really small dymax iQ5 tank

Thanks for yr advice! We're currently using ceramic pellets. Are they the same? The hair algae is growing on the live rock and the sand as well. Do I need to change the live rock and sand as well?

Hair algae overran my tank and killed my cynarina, mushroom and GSP. Now left with live rock, hammer and octopus:( Thinking of converting the pico tank into FOWLR. How can I prevent the algae from overrunning? Do I need to totally restart and recycle my tank? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Mine is IQ5. So far, no chiller. Have kept mushrooms, LPS such as Cynarina, Branch hammer, GSP, branch octopus. So far so good. Just using stock LED and IQ5 skimmer.

Daily water change? Is it possible? I heard abt 10% weekly. I don't have fan, air con, chiller, ice probe. The tank is just sitting in the hall, out of direct sunlight. I'd good advice from the friendly people at the coral shop. They know that my tank has no chiller, fan. Temperature is about 30? Room temperature. Here's the pic. http://db.tt/EA2QElvX

Thanks Mad Scientist, for such detailed information. I think the algae is diatom. My tank has been 2 months, live rock, sand cycled using sea water. Corals branch hammer and gsp came in about 6 weeks ago. Cynarina abt 5weeks with 2 false clowns n 1 cleaner shrimp. Added 1 yellow goby abt 3weeks ago. Added mixed frags of mushroom, clove polyps n zoas, 1 bubble and 1 sun coral. Realised that was when the algae really increased with alternate days feedings. Not sure about water parameters but ammonia indicator shows ok range. Filter is stock filter with stock led light. Using IQ5 skimmer. No chiller. With exception of sun n zoas, the rest seems ok. Gsp is weird though, sometimes the top part opens and sometimes the bottom polyps open. Actually quite happy with tank but really think cannot keep the Sun coral happy. As for the rest of your terminology like skimates etc, I'm afraid i'm not so sure what they are. But I appreciate all your expert advice. It's great learning for me. Read that for pico like mine, no need to measure so many parameters and add many chemicals cause it's so easy to overdose, so juat change water at least once weekly. Is this true?

Hi, can I find out from the pico owners if any of you have successfully maintained sun coral in pico tank?

Hmmm, I do not have the parameters but they could be high, judging from the algae on the tank recently. The feeding of cyclopeeze might have created high nitrates right? Is it possible to maintain a sun coral in a 3.4 gallon iq5 pico? The protein skimmer seems to be of little help in skimming anything.

I have a sun coral in my pico tank. It feeds on cyclopeeze alternate nights. It seems to be growing new baby heads but not sure why the flesh is tearing, exposing a few spots of bone. Any ideas what causes the bald spots and why the weird bald spots seem to be growing bigger?
