Butterfly serve the same purpose be it a metal spit opening type or white color spit opening type. Most people refer to the white plastic type. The split will be insert after drilling a hole similar or smaller to the size of the head. Bend the split end and insert in thro hammering. Once the whole plug insert, the split end will open and hold inside. This is good for hold on the side wall and not ceiling. Coz CG is directly down. The hole side is soft and might give way. Even it will not drop, but your plug will be slightly been pull down . Inserting timber is opening ur ceiling with a hand size allowance to insert a wood inside. Then u mount the screw from below and go thro the wood. Since the wood is long, the whole support area is bigger. More stable . But hassle is u need to cover back the hole u create to insert the timber.

If your tank is small, take a look at my thread. with skimmer, fr , pumps, auto top up, reservoir , chiller pump,even refugium inside my sump. Importance is design ur tank base on the type of equipment dimension u be getting. Get a powerful skimmer once and for all. I'm in e west. Think you have to custom make this funny configuration. You might have problem finding 2.5 ft T5 if u running that. So u gotta get a 3ft one and protruding out. If I'm not wrong, u r trying to tailor make ur tank to your house space. 1ft width is too narrow IMO .
