Tank Crack

Recommended Posts

Dear Bros,

Need your advice, I bought a 2nd hand tank setup. There is no leak untill 5 days later. The bottom of the tank in the center crack from 1 end to another end. The "expert" advice to change the tank stand because he found out that the support of the tank not so good as it sink abit. He say that the tank too heavy and support no good that cause the tank bottom to crack from the center. So he ask me to change the whole tank and stand because he say if glass crack it will straight away crack and not wait for 5 day later then crack. Me personnal myself think the stand no problem because it make of stainless steel and the workmanship of the stand is quite good from what i observer. I will attach the picture of the stand and the crack of the tank. I hope you all can give me some advice. Should i change the stand ?

I can't really tell from the photos, but is that a piece of styrofoam at the base of the tank? How thick is it? It is supposed to help compensate slight imbalances. If your stand is warped, then there is a possibility the tank cracked under pressure due to the imbalance.

Glass thickness, age of use, and method of transport are some factors that may contribute to the conditions of the tank.

Styrofoam is around 4 - 5cm thick, Glass thickness 12mm usage 1year. So does it due to the stand no good?

Your stand is weak in the centre. Base on the tank size You should need another 2 supports

in the centre.

the stand warp in the centre cause the base of your tank to crack.

Be careful next time when you purchase tank bigger than 2 ft.

I agree with peacemaker's points.

'Glass thickness, age of use, and method of transport are some factors that may contribute to the conditions'

A bit of what i've read before::

uneven base (or at an angle) with bigger tanks causes uneven pressure on the glass.

uneven surface, twists the glass, weakening it.

Like the expert says, the stand could be the cause too.

The floor/ location must b ensured that it can take the wieght and is not too slanted too.

Whether the stand is no good?,, the experts must come in n see.. Like what has been analysed

and found that it isinks abit, i think better change.

Thats just my point of view :superman:

Hi, for peace of mind; it is better to change the stand as well.

Get a proper tank maker or get second hand set that made by known tank maker.

You do not want your next tank to crack!

Totally agreed.gif!

"if glass crack it will straight away crack and not wait for 5 day later then crack" <= this not very true lor...it may be a hariline crack when shifting, then it worsen after you add rocks and sand into the tank. or maybe there are vibration from your place due to constructions that worsen the crack.

Dont reuse and save on the foam...thats the most important support for your whole tank and sump.

Marine tank is always much heavier than freshwater tank. so the stand may not be suitable for marine. the 2 thin metal support looks more like an addon and definitely will not support the weight of a reef tank. Mine easily double the width of those.

So should i get a new stand? Or can i just add more support to my tank. If not i am wasting over 1K++ just in five days if i need to change everything.
