Sump easier to maintain. Biohome media.

Hi. Sump is good and canister filter is not recommended for reef keeping. Mechanical filter can be filter socks. Biological filter can be a refugium setup. Or bio balls. Skimmer is a must.also, more things might b needed depending what u wanna keep or what u intend to keep in the future. :)

Hi bro,

Canister is okay if you clean it often.

Bro minireefer in this forum uses a canister filter for his tank. Probably you could check with him on his maintenance regime.

In my case, I use a big hang-on-back filter where I stuff the inlet tube with filter wool. The water flow on HOB is equivalent to canister. My HOB contains a bag of Seachem matrix porous rock (bio home is fine too), coral chips and a mini deep sand bed of 10cm deep, plus a bit of room for some cheatomorpha.

I changed the filter wool 2x a day (morning and evening) and it is always dirty. But the water is very clean.

During feeding I will turn off the HOB and allow 1-2 hours for the corals to eat the suspended food before turning on.

(1) Try to have a durso pipe for your overflow to reduce noise.

(2) The gap on your filter comb looks very small, this may cause water level to raise beyond what you'll expect in your display tank. Replace them if need be.

since its a new tank, u wanna try ATS? you can try to place the net mesh on the side of ther over flow. close up all the over flow holes to leaveing 1 slot to the net. use a normal t5 light hang on the side of the tank. Black out the over flow compartment. If I have a new set up, we will definitly do it.

If possible , use RO/Di wster for your cycling, I find it awesome. I running a 3x2x2 tank with 2.5 x 2x 2 slump , using RO/DI water to fill up the whole entire tank and slump, TDS reading O ppm . Then add salt to tank n slump using H2 ocean salt. Then do a proper cycling.. (my personal opinion)

Hi Bro David! Firstly Welcome to SRC And The Reefing World! :D..I Recommend using a sump..easier/ sump filteration the best..follow the diagram is good to..basic sump..no need those chips, bioballs, sponges etc that might cause harm in the long run..Just go for a filter sock at the outlet where dirty maintank water flow down into sump..
