Hi everyone, after dabbling in freshwater (CRS,KK,WR shrimps, planted, topical fishes) for 3-4 years, I finally took the courage to go into salty territory. :) Cost was of course a big factor to consider as I am still pretty green in the working world, so I took the combination of combining of reusing my freshwater equipment and SRC's very own pasar malam. Met a few nice reefers who are very willing to share and answer my newbie questions.

A snapshot of my setup:

Tank: ANS Opticube (Crystal Glass - 60cm x 30cm x 36cm)

Light: Maxspect G2 160W

Filtration 1 : Eheim Pro 2 2028 connected in series to Atman CF1200(dummy)

Filtration 2 : Eheim Pro 2226 connected in series to Atman CF600 and Eheim Classic 2213

Filtration 3 : Totto Perfect Filter S size

Skimmer: Red Sea Prizm Deluxe

Chiller : Teco RA 200 1/10HP

Wavemaker: Fluval SEA CP1

Haha, I was quite kiasu previous when I was keeping CRS, as I have a space constrain in terms of the size of tank, the next best thing I could do is to increase the volume by increasing my filtration. Having a sump is bound to have folks at home making noise, so I stick to these canisters and hopefully it will come good. No choice, have to be hardworking for hobby. haha :)

Nice rock shapes! A few pointers from me : - remember to clean all ur filters at least once a month! If you can do it twice a month that's the best. Canisters are nitrate factories if you don't clean them. -your sand looks too deep. I'll just leave 1-1.5 inch at most. Too deep and you'll encounter problems in the long run. My 0.02cents

My sand is around 4-5cm, care to share what might be the potential problem? Is it the possible release of ammonia or other harmful gases might be accumulated ?

welcome to this exciting hobby. like you, I am also quite new & also tried to convert a fresh water tank into a marine without sump.

just to share - pls double check for any leakages (last thing you wanto is to come home to a soaped floor)

Me too am a nano tank player, 34 liters to be exact. haha.

For me because my tank is so small, I cannot depend on mechanical/Chemical filtration. So Bio filtration (live rock and sand) is our only option. And since our water volume is so small. Water change is key. I change water up to 2 times a week. 3 liters each time. haha (easy for me since my water volume smaller then others ATO tank =X) The water changes should keep all your parameters in check.

Invest in some good salt. It will last you a long time. Water change is key.

Also dose your bacterial religiously.

And welcome to this hobby.

Thanks bro, looking to keep some softies and easy corals for a start. Still do not have specific ones but will thread carefully when I go lfs shopping. You are so right, I sent my canister to change the primer o-ring as it was leaking from there..lucky my father discovered it when I was away from home.

I initially wanted to start with around 34 litres but decided to go with 64 litres instead. :) Judging on the water I made for my canisters, my entire water volume should be around 80 plus litres, without taking into consideration of rocks and sand though. I am using Red Sea Coral Pro right now.

Got my Pinpoint PH Meter and I have the following airbubble in the probe. Anyone of other reefers have this as well?

I asked the LFS which I bought from and also reef depot, they said the gel like solution inside with air bubble is normal. I have checked with a couple of people, they dun have this in their probe though.

My ph is around 7.7-7.8. Seems a little low? How should I bring it up? I was looking at adding bacteria king as my media,will it help? The media looks big though got my canister.

Hi bro, welcome here. I am also quite new to this hobby and was running a planted tank since last year dec. Learnt and gain alot of experience from aquatic quotient! If you are looking for a quiet reef setup, I will recommend you look into the durso piping for the overflow. The durso piping will eliminate the sucking sound when water flow down into the sump. After the overflow and down into the drain pipe, ensure that the drain pipe is below the water surface and you will have minimum noise. Basically only the sound of bubbles. As for the skimmer, you can try the bubble magus curve series which is very silent. You will only hear it if you open your tank cabinet door. For the return pump, the eheim 1250 that I am using produces a vibrating sound which cannot be heard when sitting about 2m away.
