Has anyone try both of the above? I use 200 micron for both. The nylon sock can be used for 1 week and still look very clean. Meanwhile the cotton one overflow in 3 days with lots of brown debris stick to the wall.

If both are 200 micron, why so much difference?

I have both and having the same issue as you. My thought is nylon and cotton although are same 200 micron but the thickness is different so the thicker one will clog easily than thinner one.

IMHO, Cotton sock is better in filtering bubbles from DT to sump when water gush down but bad point is clog easily and more difficult to wash clean.

Same. So for nylon you have to go smaller.

Actually i like the way cotton sock trap the dirt. I can see it is dark brown in color and when I backflash, all the dirt start coming out. Only problem is that I have to wash very often.

How I wish they sell it even cheaper so that we can just use and dispose instead of washing.

I am using 150 micron nylon sock from GFS filtration. 15" long and 4" diameter, can use for 2 wks without clogging and very easy to wash as material quite soft compared to the old nylon socks I used before.

Display Tank : 36" x 20" x 20" Herbie overflow box design, Sump : 36" x 21" x 17", Frag Tank : 16” x 20” x 16”, custom built by Tank Culture.

Lightings : Ecotech  Radion XR15 Pro x 2 for Main Display Tank, Inled R80 x 1 for Frag Tank.

Chiller : Dalkin 1hp compressor with build-in drop coil.

Skimmer : Skimz Octa SC205i Protein Skimmer.

FR : H2Ocean FMR75 Fluidised Media Reactor with Hailea HX-2500 (Feeder Pump) running Rowaphos.

CR : Skimz Monzter E Series CM122 Calcium Reactor.

BPR: Marine Source Biopellet  Reactor with Continuum Reef Biopellet Fuel.

Main Return Pump : SICCE Syncra ADV 9.0 & Jebao ACQ-10000 Water Pump.

Wavemaker : Jebao MOW-9 x2 for Main Display Tank & Jebao SLW-20M  Sine Wave Pump for  Frag Tank.

Water Top Up: AutoAqua Smart ATO Lite.

Consider what a filter sock should be doing. Removing finer particles from the water before they enter the main filtering system. This would suggest that a sock that is requiring more often change-out is certainly doing the better job. After all, we have not changed the amount of dirt in the water, only the efficiency of its removal!

We offer both kinds of filter sox and, interestingly enough, the nylons are always more popular. Why? They require less maintainance, as they are not as efficient. Hmmm. I guess we are a lazy lot.

The polyesther (not cotton, but one understands the analogy) felt sox are much more efficient at fine particle removal. I have to change mine every 3 days on average. I keep at least 3 at hand running them through the hot whites wash (90°C), with bleach, on the weekend. They are subsequently further rinsed in clean water to remove any detergent residues. (you'll know if you did this enough, when your skimmer goes crazy for a few minutes! Keep your eyes on it after the change out).

If the idea is to remove as much suspended material as possible, before it can break down, then replacing and cleaning the sox regularly is paramount.

Filter sox can be used in filter systems to remove micro-bubbles, as well. The draw-string version Vertex offers in polyesther felt is great for putting around skimmer exhausts.

cheers,

Jamie
