SRC Member asg Posted October 15, 2014 Author SRC Member Share Posted October 15, 2014 15/10/14 – Magnetic Island (DIY) Received a gift in the form of a very unique DIY magnetic island from a nice bro yesterday (it is always refreshing to visit bros with nice tanks and evident that a lot of heart was put into their tanks). The concept is very simplet yet interesting: glued a flat rock to the top of a magnetic cleaner and encrust the rock with small pieces of coral that one likes. For this gift, the nice bro has a bird nest, zoa and some luminous gsp polyp glued on it. The advantage of this magnetic island is it is very free placing i.e. I can place it on any side of the tank and adjust the position to my wish. For now, I have placed a small clam on it as the clam has a hard time attaching itself on a surface, no thanks to all the snails and hermit crabs knocking the clam off its placement every now and then. And hey, I might just want to expand the idea by placing sun coral (or any other coral) which I don’t want the hermit crabs/ shrimps to steal its food during feeding. Unless my hermit crabs decide to learn how to climb wall else they will never be able to reach the island. Thanks a lot bro for the island and the other free zoa frag, I really love them now is time for some photos of this lovely island. I am puala ubin oh oh oh Close up view Side view with the island Front view with the island Quote 子非鱼,焉知鱼之乐... (you are not the fish so you...) Then: my 4FT low tech selling off tank... Edmund Koh
Cool! Looks like something I wanted to buy online but too expansive. Maybe I should DIY a magnetic frag rack into a magnetic rock using concrete or putty to form random rough surface

SRC Member asg Posted October 24, 2014 Author SRC Member Share Posted October 24, 2014 24/10/14 - Super Sun and RO/DI FTS @ 24/10/14 a relatively quiet week (by my standard) for me... I guess the news that I will be traveling again for two weeks in Nov has really tempered my mood a fair bit. Will be another two long weeks away and hopefully this time round I wont return to that many LS casualties... On the bright side, I will be at Guangzhou and hey, it is taobao time, to replenish my first bite reef pellets and LPS pellets (and maybe get myself a few more goodies). The LPS pellets work really well for me, because unlike those fine powder feed, pellets wont foul the water that much and I can actually see my LPS are eating them. So here is what has happened during this week: Super Sun After several weeks of placing the super sun in the shade and slowly inducing it to open in open water and blight light and blar blar blar. The super sun (finally) is willing to open under white light. Super sun 1: Finished goods - no longer scare of bright light Super sun 2: WIP - slowly moving it into un-shaded area Also, I am thinking of actually buying more zoas/ sun/ ricordea/ etc and breaking them apart and gluing the small colony to fill in the spaces between the LR. Let's hope that I can get a few right size one before my trip. RO/DI Bought the first ever DI unit (Crystal Plus one stage) and was having fun solving all the connection thingy. Brought it brand new at $72 (free with one TDS tester). No complaint on the price. As for the effect, TDS measured on water straight out of my tap is around 75-80, after running the DI (at half the recommended flow rate), the TDS reading of the processed water is about 35-40 (nitrate about 2ppm). Can live with the reading for now, but most likely will buy this DI supplement to further bring down the TDS. Hey, at less than $20 per tube, I reckon it is very much cheaper in the long run than replacing the >$60 usual RO/ DI resin. Aquafoss DI树脂单元滤芯 超纯水瞬间降低TDS到0 水族海水珊瑚SPS (http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=16800814897) That's all for this week. Cheers and happy reef shopping over the weekend. 且reef且珍重. Quote 子非鱼,焉知鱼之乐... SRC Member asg Posted October 30, 2014 Author SRC Member Share Posted October 30, 2014 30/10/14 - Coraline algae/ Super suns/ Zoas FTS @ 30 Oct 2014 Coralline algae Less than three months into my tank, I am delighted to see coralline algae starting to grow… out of all the places, on my in tank skimmer. Hopefully, it will grow fast all over my tank and left no space for nuisance algae. Super sun Glued my super sun 2 beside my super sun 1, hopefully they make good neighbor and always open big big. Zoas Bought a few zoas under the influence of one LFS owner. I quite like the pinkest purple, but somehow the colours is not eye catching when surrounded by various more striking colour corals. Nothing much elst, counting down to my China trip and spending my bucks there buying good value items which are not available in SG LFS. Last some photos taken using my new humble Nikon D3200. SRC Member asg Posted November 4, 2014 Author SRC Member Share Posted November 4, 2014 04/11/14 - Continuel expanding my zoas collections FTS@04/11/14 Haha, managed to find two very striking colours of fiji zoas colonies, one yellow and one green, to fill the gaps of my existing corals. Not a particular zoas lover myself but the colour of these two zoas are too hard to give them a pass... Also have been trying hard to ID them but to no avail, the closest description that I got is radio active zoas. Anyway who cares so long as they can keep their bright colours I am more than happy liao. One goes up to the top One goes to the middle One camping here first and here also Side by Side Frag here (see how fast it will grow in my two weeks trip) and here teaming them up with my existing zoas frag Cheers, and may the zoas be with you. SRC Member asg Posted November 26, 2014 Author SRC Member Share Posted November 26, 2014 26 Nov 2014 - Toys, more toys and nothing but toys FTV 26 Nov 2014 Have not updated for several weeks liao, partly because of my two weeks trip but mostly because I have gotten myself too many DIY toys during the trip and is now slowly playing with them: DI filter - played (review written) ATS - DIY-ed. waiting for first harvest to see the effect of the 10w 450nm +650nm ATS LED (will write a review if result is worth the time of writting one) ATO - lying around. No motivation to set it up yet as I am not traveling in dec... I guess will have to wait till end Dec before I can try out the duo sensors ATO. Camera auxiliary thingy - unwilling to buy a micro lens (in reef term one normal micro lens is equal to two chillers or 15 blue face angels or 60 blue tangs) so I got myself all the cheaper alternative, you name it, I have it... magnifying lens (+2, +3, +4, +8, +10), invertion tubes (i think that what they call it), extension tube, CPL lens, etc etc. so far only have time to play with the +10 lens and I would say for $5 each, I am more than happy with the results. But I guess still quite some way to go till I can capture the golden torch as gold in the picture. Like what they say in china, 有图有真相: Normal zoom +10 lens +10 lens Normal zoom +10 lens +10 lens +10 lens +10 lens Cheers, thats all for now my fellow reefers, let's all enjoy the hobby as it meant to be.
