Nuisance algae

Now this a strange one.. Am having nuisance algae in my tank, hair algae as well as Cyano. Have dosed dr pohl + other algae medications. Have changed the water to nearly 90%. Have cleaned sand, sump, Refugium et al... But no effect... Have been scrapping the rocks thrice a week and have also had three days of zero light.. Algae does not stop. Any advise will help... Tank is 600 liters, has livestock like fish(15), four shrimps, sea hare, several crabs, several sand dollars, snails both sand and turbo, three bristle star fish, two sand starfish, several corals..

Do use DI or similar treated water . Do add bacteria. Do try to remove the nuisance algae ,daily and as much as possible. Do ensure good flow.

Do run rowa phos if you can. Do endure skimmer is operating effectively. Do reduce feeding.

Do have the confidence and will to overcome this temporary set back.

Thanks YT. Am really sad. I use sea water purchased from the farm. Rowphos, skimmer, all good and have been scrubbing the 5#^*+>@ algae at least thrice a week.. After my 90% change it has come back next day. Am really at my wits end as something is emitting NI and don't know what...

Was thinking of flow.. Have two jebao on the right and left and also the return on the right.. All on full flow.. Would it help to get some small wave makers for the back of the tank.. Two small ones to blow the rocks? Suggestions welcome on whether this will help and also which brand I should go for ( Low powered)

First test the NO3 and PO4 of your NSW. If it is high, your 90% WC is equal to 90% top up of NO3 and PO4.

Then next question is how big and established is your bio filter.

Subsequencelty then we can talk about skimmer, flow, lighting, etc.

Are u having bryopsis ?

do note that Bryopsis is different from the regular hair algae which is caused by nutrient.

Recently my tank kena bryopsis too. No matter how much i pluck etc , will grow back damn fast. No fish/tang will eat it. Not even snails. 15% wc / week religiously doesnt even help 1 bit.

Bryopsis can thrive well in low nutrient system. I dont have nutrient issue yet this damn bryopsis grow like weeds.

If you identified your algae is indeed bryopsis, you can try using the magnesium method by raising your magnesium to 1700-1800 with continuum mg or kent marine mg. (Must be liquid , not powder)

I am still in the process of getting rid of this fully. But here is the results of raising mg with continuum mg

After

Only 2nd day dose , some part of the algae will turned transparent and then melted off.

If it is normal hair algae maybe can try algae turf scrubber? I was running one initially den i tried taking it offline, in a few days my rocks were covered in GHA, i got a sea hare and started running the ATS. Now i gave away the sea hare and i dun have anymore HA on my rocks

Will the high magnesium have side effect? I'm having some algae bloom now.

Will the high magnesium have side effect? I'm having some algae bloom now.

the only side effect is salinity will go up.

everytime i poured 500ml (raise 70ppm) , my salinity will go from 1.026 to 1.0265

recommended to only raise mg by 100ppm/day.

quick increasation will kill your snails.

I am afraid mine is Cyano and hair.. Any ideas? Yes did the chk the WC for parameters and it was fine..

Cyano imo to treat it , can dose bac like zeobak / biodigest.

Hair algae most probably due to phosphate. if you are using salifert to test, it isnt accurate at all. Unless you are using more accurate way to measure like hanna phosphorus checker.

Atleast cyano/hair algae isnt worse than bubbble algae + bryopsis hahahah

Have cynao high chance PO4 is high.

If you using Salifert to measure PO4 forget about the reading.

I use to get 0.02 ppm but whe I use Hanna it show 0.25.

If you don't want to measure then run rowa.
