depends on how we define reef safe ah. I have two electric blue hermit crabs. They are coral safe except the time they knock down un-glue corals...

but they will really kill snail for their shells....

子非鱼,焉知鱼之乐... (you are not the fish so you...)

Then: my 4FT low tech selling off tank... (2006)

Now: (2014)

urgh.... bro can share your experience? I have two of them now...

Bro long story short,

Crab started out like an angel. Eats leftover, sift and clean sand.

Then starts to knock down corals, and the last straw was when my tank crashed when it decides to snipe off my xenias' stems and munching on them.

Although i never knew whether was it because xenia was dying? Heads was open and pulsing. Anyway, I never dare to try again.

Had a very bad experience with hermit too. Had a red scarlet hermit. 2 heads of my torch were infected with brown jelly and this fella just took them out even to the tentacles that look stressed. Heng I managed to recover my torch. It is still healthy.. just that a bit "botak" only.

From my understanding, they are still carnivores & scavengers; so I have to say it depends on luck whether they are reef safe. Imho, they are not 100% reef safe.

Agreed. Hermit crabs in particular will help with scavenging. But once there is lack of food source or they had a taste of something better, than they may choose to go for corals. It's not surprising, as with any other scavengers.... Personally, I don't keep hermits in my tank as I prefer using snails over hermits. My shrimps are actually the ones that assist with the clean up of left over stuff on the sandbed. I don't feed my shrimps, so they do a good job scavenging.

Bro if you have snails, dont get hermit crabs. Crabs will dig out those snails for their shells.

Cleaning crew can get diamond goby to clean sand and get the super tongan nassarius snail for cleaning up leftover food. In fact these snails are so effective that I couldnt find the corpse of a couple of fishes even after removing all the rocks. It just vanished overnight.
