Hi Reefing bros,

Currently I'm looking to set up my reef tank again. Learnt quite a number if valuable lessons from my first setup.

I'm looking into having a chiller n a RODI system as well.

Possible tank size :3ft by 2ft by 1.5ft

Approx: 60 gallons

Mixed reef

How much does it add to ur water n electricity bills by running such a system?

I read tat 1 gallon of pure water = 4 gallons of waste water..

Any way to reduce tat? Wat do y'all do wit the waste water?

Any cost efficient ways?

Thanks in advance. Still a newbie bros.

bro,

Waste water can use to flush the toilet bowl, mop the floor, wash the car....etc.

It depends on the water pressure. Otherwise a booster pump would be a good addition. Visit madpetz he will be able to give U very good advice. Ask him about a upgrade of the ro membrane too for faster collection of rodi water. I upgraded mine to 200g/day if I remember correctly

I have about 55gal and abt $50 for electrical but need to use cost saving equipment like led light, dc pump and so. If you dont want to have waste water, u could use di only if ur water change volume is not so much. Di exhaust faster than ro but no waste water.

Difference between RO and DI is upfront cost + cost of water vs cost of resin.

Using DI only, your resin exhausts much quicker since you need to reduce tap water from about 60-90 TDS (water from tap usually about this level) to 0. Using RO + DI, your resin lasts much longer since you only need to reduce RO water from about 6-9 TDS (RO usually reduces about 90% TDS on average) to 0. However, RO + DI involves waste water and higher upfront cost.

Hence, depending on the size of your tank and the frequency at which you change water, one of them would prove more cost efficient for you - you'll need to calculate for yourself and decide.
