To me, A Valida sp. & A Nana sp. has very similar looks.

Unless I'm able see the mother colony of frags.

Even radial corallite are quite similar to me in person.

I tried to download some photos to compare yourself.

Designer Name : ORA Red Planet

Species Name : Acropora Hyacinthus

Good one Linko :score:

There has been many doubts about whether Red Planet is a mille or Hyacinthus... but my take is that the true Red Planet acro it's actually a Hyacinthus :big_boss:

That said, the confusion arises between the two different genus is due to the fact that some milles do exhibit very similar coloration ( red and green ) .

Treat others the way you wanna be treated...

What I realized is ORA Red Planet is A. hyacintus sp. and also FC red planet is A. Millepora sp.

Bcuz I had both of these frags last time.

Different designers cultured different species.

That is the reason, I was learning & sharing about species name of designer sps in this thread .

Again, I would like to request to share your valuable experiences in here.

Red planet is a hyacinthus?

Interesting observation. Aren't the coralites more like a millepora or in some cases like a prostrata?

Yes this is a very interesting topic to discuss about. If you refer to the ORA red planet where the original red planet is found, the growth form is very much tabling, also the coralites are trending towards small radial shape rather then those cup-shaped commonly noticed among the milles.

Another point I noticed about the Red Planet acro is the polyps type. They are small and tiny pe instead of bushy long type like those of milles and prostrate.

This are my observation having had the Red Planet before :)

# 18 - Acropora Millepora

A Millepora sp. has wide variety colors and thus many different designer names belong to this species.

Red Mille, Green Mille, Rose Mille, Royal Blue Mille, Rainbow Mille, ... and many more. :D

# 19 - Acropora Prostrata

A Prostrata sp. shows a close similarity to A Millepora sp.

It also has wide variety in color formation.

Off course, A Prostrata sp. has many names as well.

A Millepora sp. Vs A Prostrata

Between these two species, there are few points of similarity and differences.

Here are some points what I could observe with my little knowledge.

- Similarity

1. Hairy polyps extension

2. Axial corallites are tubular in shapes

3. Radial corallites are compact and they have prominent lower lips giving a scale-like appearance.

- Dissimilarity

1. Millepora tend to grow short & uniform branches . ( Stubby like Thumb ) :Lol

2. Prostrata grow thin elongate branches. ( Finger-like growth)

3. Millepora have more of rounded corallite scales which are connected at the edge. ( Not I observed ) ;)

4. Prostrata have disconnected edges of corallite scales. ( Also not I observed ) :D

Hope, my observation with lit knowledge can be acceptable.

Just curious, does the growth form you mentioned applies to wild colonies or aquacultured ones?

My impression (from googling) is that growth form for aquacultured sps in our tanks varies due to the intensity of flow we apply in our tanks. Very strong flow leads to stumpy and thick growth and reasonable flow leads to thin and elongated growth. Just what I have read online but ive not experienced it myself as my tank is still new..

What if a acropora millepora experience a lower flow in our tanks? Will they turn out to be thin and elongated? Just for dicussion to enhance my limited knowlegde :D

My infos are both wild & aquaculture colonies .

In my lit experiences, our wave in the tank cannot change so much different to Mille & Prostrata like what you said.

Our wave will affect the formation of branches.But it couldn't change the Mille to Prostrata.

:)

Thin & Thick case more happen in Monti Plate.

Bro dingding brought up a excellent point regarding the flow dynamics in a reef system that will affect growth forms and indirectly create confusion with identification.

Here's a example of a frag from a Montipora capriconis (plating and scrolling growth form) that decided to go encrusting when positioned in a very different setting.
