For the Triton Marine tank... well, we just have to wait for the 2-3 weeks cycling period. Must set good example!

It's not an exhibition and not an overnight tank. So... patience :pinch::pinch::pinch: (The waiting period is really hard)

Haven't really have an opening yet. Nothing much to see for the marine tank for now. Maybe need few more weeks to at least put some colours into the tank.

For weekdays, we will always have someone there 11am to 7pm so welcome!

Address : 302 Sims Ave #01-07 S387516. Near Geylang lorong 27.

Like many of the reefers, we sent our tank water to Germany last week.

Triton test results for the show tank is out. Will share in a while.

Not fantastic - seems like the sand we use leaks Vanadium (V) and silicon (Si).

Let's do some reading on Vanadium and Silicon elements. From Wikipedia:

"Vanadium is a chemical element with symbol V and atomic number 23. It is a hard, silvery grey, ductile and malleable transition metal. The element is found only in chemically combined form in nature, but once isolated artificially, the formation of an oxide layer stabilizes the free metal somewhat against further oxidation..

Biological role

Vanadium accumulation in tunicates and ascidians[edit]

Vanadium is essential to ascidians and tunicates, where it is stored in the highly acidified vacuoles of certain blood cell types, designated vanadocytes. Vanabins (vanadium binding proteins) have been identified in the cytoplasm of such cells. The concentration of vanadium in these ascidians' blood is up to ten million times higher[specify][57][58] than the concentration of vanadium in surrounding seawater, which normally contains 1 to 2 µg/l.[59][60] The function of this vanadium concentration system, and these vanadium-containing proteins, is still unknown but the vanadocytes are later deposited just under the outer surface of the tunic where their presence may deterpredation.[61]"

Abstracts from Wikipedia:

Silicon is a chemical element with symbol Si and atomic number 14. It is a tetravalent metalloid, more reactive than germanium, the metalloid directly below it in the table. Silicon is the eighth most common element in the universe by mass, but very rarely occurs as the pure free element in nature. It is most widely distributed in dustssandsplanetoids, and planets as various forms ofsilicon dioxide (silica) or silicates. Over 90% of the Earth's crust is composed of silicate minerals, making silicon the second most abundant element in the Earth's crust (about 28% by mass) after oxygen.

Biological role[edit]

Silica skeletons of radiolaria in false color.

Although silicon is readily available in the form of silicates, very few organisms have a use for it. Diatomsradiolaria and siliceous sponges use biogenic silica as a structural material to construct skeletons. In more advanced plants, the silica phytoliths (opal phytoliths) are rigid microscopic bodies occurring in the cell; some plants, for example rice, need silicon for their growth.[62][63][64] The possible biological potential of silicon as bioavailable orthosilicic acid and the potential beneficial effects on human health has been reviewed.[65]

Triton Test Analysis for Sims Ave - August 2015

1. Unwanted Heavy Metals

Glad that the salt and water used did not contain any unwanted metals.

2. Macro-Elements

Salinity. I get a total of 13,040 mg/L when I add up Na, Ca, Mg and K. Normal seawater at 35 ppt

would add up to 12,900 mg/L. Guess we have overdone it by adding too much to boost the Mg. We

boosted up the Mg, Ca and Kh due to precipitation of CaCo3 during cycling to maintain the Kh at 8

Ca. Slight overdose of Ca but nothing to worry here.

Mg. The higher than normal reading was due to overdose of Mg. Will only start dosing Mg when it

has come down to about 1350.

K. Slightly on the low side. Some food does contain K therefore it is added when you feed the

livestock. However, we do not intend to have heavy feeding for this tank. So probably will boost the

reading to the recommended level.

Br. Not sure why it’s slightly elevated, could be from the salt. However, not a concern as we are not

using ozone.

B. Reading is normal. Good to keep B slightly below or at the recommended level as it acts as a

buffer against pH swing. Elevated B can gives you false reading of the alkalinity and is harmful to

some livestock in the tank.

Sr. Sr is ok.

S. Sulfate is low. Indication of imbalance in the chloride to sulfate ratio. Will use magnesium

sulphate instead of magnesium chloride to boost the Mg the next time its required.

3. Li-Group

Li. The reading is slightly low, will need to dose to the recommended level.

Ni. Ni is ok.

Mo. Mo is slightly low but still in the ok range

4. I-Group

V. Elevated. No idea where is it coming from. Have to investigate further.

Zn. The reading is zero, not sure about that. Might not be actually zeroes, could be just below

Triton’s Limit Of Detection (LOD).

Mn. Again it could be due to the LOD. Will boost up to the recommended level as Mn is required by

some corals.

I. Need to be boosted up.

5. Fe-Group

Cr. No action required.

Co. No action required.

Fe. No action required.

6. Ba-Group

Ba. Slightly elevated but no action required.

Be. No action required.

7. Si-Group

Si. Very very high. We suspect silicate is leaching from the new sand. Probably will do water change

for a quick remedy.

8. Nutrient-Group

P. Reading is zero.

PO4. Reading is zero. Salt used does not contain any phosphate.

Summary and Our Own recommendation for our own tank!

Disclaimer *This thread is to share as much information we can with regards to the Triton method of reefing. We will not only post of all positive results but negative results as well. We are not finding fault with any brands of salt or sand or whatever equipment.  Just sharing as much information as we can to understand this reefing hobby better.*

In summary, the result is not bad though some ions are below Triton's recommended setpoints. However, the Royal Nature salt used is giving us setpoints of the natural seawater while Triton's setpoints are derived using data from thousands of water samples collected. Therefore, we do not expect the parameters from the Royal Nature salt used to be inline with Triton's setpoint.

After a discussion with my colleagues, we have decided to conduct a water change using Royal Nature salt mix with RO/DI water. We believe running the tank for a month has exhaust the silicon and vanadium in our sand. We do not want to run bare bottom due to the exposed recirculating pipes at the base of the tank. Changing sand may still release unwanted elements.

Nice share.. that could be the reason why my new sand bed is suffering from alage issues previously although my phosphate and nitrate are low .

Hi Kelvin, My PO4 already "bye bye". Ha ha its reading is 0.

Usually Triton test shows significant phosphate level even when normal test kits shows a reading of 0. So when Triton tank shows 0 phosphate, phosphate level is too low. Not of any concern as phosphate will be introduce once the fishes are in.
