For the Triton Marine tank... well, we just have to wait for the 2-3 weeks cycling period. Must set good example!

It's not an exhibition and not an overnight tank. So... patience :pinch::pinch::pinch: (The waiting period is really hard)

Haven't really have an opening yet. Nothing much to see for the marine tank for now. Maybe need few more weeks to at least put some colours into the tank.

For weekdays, we will always have someone there 11am to 7pm so welcome!

Not fantastic - seems like the sand we use leaks Vanadium (V) and silicon (Si).

Let's do some reading on Vanadium and Silicon elements. From Wikipedia:

"Vanadium is a chemical element with symbol V and atomic number 23. It is a hard, silvery grey, ductile and malleable transition metal. The element is found only in chemically combined form in nature, but once isolated artificially, the formation of an oxide layer stabilizes the free metal somewhat against further oxidation..

Biological role

Vanadium accumulation in tunicates and ascidians[edit]

Vanadium is essential to ascidians and tunicates, where it is stored in the highly acidified vacuoles of certain blood cell types, designated vanadocytes. Vanabins (vanadium binding proteins) have been identified in the cytoplasm of such cells. The concentration of vanadium in these ascidians' blood is up to ten million times higher[specify][57][58] than the concentration of vanadium in surrounding seawater, which normally contains 1 to 2 µg/l.[59][60] The function of this vanadium concentration system, and these vanadium-containing proteins, is still unknown but the vanadocytes are later deposited just under the outer surface of the tunic where their presence may deterpredation.[61]"

Abstracts from Wikipedia:

Silicon is a chemical element with symbol Si and atomic number 14. It is a tetravalent metalloid, more reactive than germanium, the metalloid directly below it in the table. Silicon is the eighth most common element in the universe by mass, but very rarely occurs as the pure free element in nature. It is most widely distributed in dustssandsplanetoids, and planets as various forms ofsilicon dioxide (silica) or silicates. Over 90% of the Earth's crust is composed of silicate minerals, making silicon the second most abundant element in the Earth's crust (about 28% by mass) after oxygen.

Biological role[edit]

220px-Radiolaria3434.JPG

Silica skeletons of radiolaria in false color.

Although silicon is readily available in the form of silicates, very few organisms have a use for it. Diatomsradiolaria and siliceous sponges use biogenic silica as a structural material to construct skeletons. In more advanced plants, the silica phytoliths (opal phytoliths) are rigid microscopic bodies occurring in the cell; some plants, for example rice, need silicon for their growth.[62][63][64] The possible biological potential of silicon as bioavailable orthosilicic acid and the potential beneficial effects on human health has been reviewed.[65]

Triton Test Analysis for Sims Ave - August 2015

1. Unwanted Heavy Metals

Glad that the salt and water used did not contain any unwanted metals.

2. Macro-Elements

Salinity. I get a total of 13,040 mg/L when I add up Na, Ca, Mg and K. Normal seawater at 35 ppt

would add up to 12,900 mg/L. Guess we have overdone it by adding too much to boost the Mg. We

boosted up the Mg, Ca and Kh due to precipitation of CaCo3 during cycling to maintain the Kh at 8

Ca. Slight overdose of Ca but nothing to worry here.

Mg. The higher than normal reading was due to overdose of Mg. Will only start dosing Mg when it

has come down to about 1350.

K. Slightly on the low side. Some food does contain K therefore it is added when you feed the

livestock. However, we do not intend to have heavy feeding for this tank. So probably will boost the

reading to the recommended level.

Br. Not sure why it’s slightly elevated, could be from the salt. However, not a concern as we are not

using ozone.

B. Reading is normal. Good to keep B slightly below or at the recommended level as it acts as a

buffer against pH swing. Elevated B can gives you false reading of the alkalinity and is harmful to

some livestock in the tank.

Sr. Sr is ok.

S. Sulfate is low. Indication of imbalance in the chloride to sulfate ratio. Will use magnesium

sulphate instead of magnesium chloride to boost the Mg the next time its required.

3. Li-Group

Li. The reading is slightly low, will need to dose to the recommended level.

Ni. Ni is ok.

Mo. Mo is slightly low but still in the ok range

4. I-Group

V. Elevated. No idea where is it coming from. Have to investigate further.

Zn. The reading is zero, not sure about that. Might not be actually zeroes, could be just below

Triton’s Limit Of Detection (LOD).

Mn. Again it could be due to the LOD. Will boost up to the recommended level as Mn is required by

some corals.

I. Need to be boosted up.

5. Fe-Group

Cr. No action required.

Co. No action required.

Fe. No action required.

6. Ba-Group

Ba. Slightly elevated but no action required.

Be. No action required.

7. Si-Group

Si. Very very high. We suspect silicate is leaching from the new sand. Probably will do water change

for a quick remedy.

8. Nutrient-Group

P. Reading is zero.

PO4. Reading is zero. Salt used does not contain any phosphate.

Summary and Our Own recommendation for our own tank!

Disclaimer *This thread is to share as much information we can with regards to the Triton method of reefing. We will not only post of all positive results but negative results as well. We are not finding fault with any brands of salt or sand or whatever equipment.  Just sharing as much information as we can to understand this reefing hobby better.*

In summary, the result is not bad though some ions are below Triton's recommended setpoints. However, the Royal Nature salt used is giving us setpoints of the natural seawater while Triton's setpoints are derived using data from thousands of water samples collected. Therefore, we do not expect the parameters from the Royal Nature salt used to be inline with Triton's setpoint.

After a discussion with my colleagues, we have decided to conduct a water change using Royal Nature salt mix with RO/DI water. We believe running the tank for a month has exhaust the silicon and vanadium in our sand. We do not want to run bare bottom due to the exposed recirculating pipes at the base of the tank. Changing sand may still release unwanted elements.

Nice share.. that could be the reason why my new sand bed is suffering from alage issues previously although my phosphate and nitrate are low .

Hi Kelvin, My PO4 already "bye bye". Ha ha its reading is 0.

Usually Triton test shows significant phosphate level even when normal test kits shows a reading of 0. So when Triton tank shows 0 phosphate, phosphate level is too low. Not of any concern as phosphate will be introduce once the fishes are in.

      Dear Reefers, need advice.
      Set-up
I upgraded to a larger All-in-one tank 12.5g  from IM Nuvo 10g. I have a) customized Media basket and b )the Minimax Innovative marine desktop reactor from my previous tank. I repurposed both to become two refugiums because I have the accessories (ie free) and why two refugium?:- because there is a seperator in the backchamber so it ended up with two. I installed the Chaetomax LED light 2 days ago and both share the LED light. A friend kindly provided me a pinch of Chaeto so I am all set. And today just bought some Tiger pods and added to both refugiums (this is for fun as I know I should have waited LONGER. Me bad.)
Here is the question: the Minimax reactor is acrylic and transparent. Is it a good idea to place that into the AIO backchamber as a repurposed refugium? Will the "leaked" light cause the whole AIO chamber to grow algae??!!! Or because of the presence of the two lumps of Chaetos in their respective refugiums, they will take up the nutrients and the surrounding will be algae free? Reefer bros/sis with such similar experiences, please enlighten me. Thanks. (The Media Basket is black on 2 sides but the chamber is black so in essence there should be less light "leakage"). Or maybe it doesn't even matter? Or should i make a customized shade so that the Chaetomax LED light only shine on the two refugiums? Or i should get rid of the repurposed Minimax reactor and purchase another Media basket (like S$58!!!!) to prevent light leakage. You can see I need real HELP!
      Past Mistake
I know what DOESNT work. In my old IM 10G tank, i saw Innovative Marine marketing this outside LED magnetic light. Use a razor to slice off the black lamination and shine a LED light through. And the video looks so cool. I had some empty space in the backchamber and I did exactly that and put some rough material in the chamber for the Chaeto to cling on. The result is the whole area become a sludge fest and the algae blocked the light and I had one extra area to clean. On hinsight, I should have used the Media Basket as a refugium instead of using the "free" space in the chamber. Too much work and fault is mine. Had I used the Media basket, it might have worked.
      Caveat
I know there is a proportionate effective ratio between size of tank and the refugium size. Having two small refugiums might be pointless.. yes water change,  yes good tank maintenance etc.. it is just hobbyist tinkering but at least I hope i can achieve optimal tinkering with my reefer bros' advice here. After all this is the joy of the hobby to experiment and see the outcome.
      Super thanks!!!

      Hi fellow hobbyists,
I am very new to the marine tank set up. Currently running a seahorse only species tank with 2 canisters filter at each end for filtration.
I have another FW tank which i intend to convert into a sump that will serve the seahorse tank but i am still kinda confused on the proper compartmentalization of the sump tank which i hope to include a refugium.
Below is a draft sketch of the sump tank i intend to set up.
Can fellow hobbyist provide some inputs/alterations as to where i should change or improve upon?
Also, how do i know what pump size i should get for the tank?
My DT tank is 126cm x 23cm x 38cm(height) with water volume of about 90 to 92 litres only.
      Intended sump tank dimension is 88cm x 17cm x 23cm (height)
Hoping to get some valuable inputs. TIA

      Hi,
Can anyone pls explain about sump tank.. is refugium consider part of sump or it is actually one of many other different types of sump setup?  Or can anyone direct me to refugium discussion in SGReef. Cant seem dig the topic.
Can i just rely just sump tank with LR and sand + micro algae and some mechanical filter? Or just mechanical filter will do?

I had cycle my tank for like 4mths and still empty tank with LR and 3inch sand. Added some bacteria and followed all instruction by the Henry from Marine Life. Will the bacteria dead as there is no food..lol
      Sorry for the lengthy post.
