Dino/Diatoms/Cyano

Hi everyone

I’m having some trouble with this rust like thing on my sand bed. Have tried sucking them up, and blowing them away with a turkey baster but they come back real quick.

Have added Seachem sea gel to reduce phosphates and organics in the water. My LPS don’t seem to be doing well =/

Hoping it’s not Dinos but I’m not sure of how to ID them.

Is the algae stringy? Are there visible signs of air bubbles? If yes, it might be dino. Else it might be diatom. Cyano is reddish in colour. Let us know your water parameters too.

Thanks for the reply! I do not see air bubbles. They are brownish in colour and seem to form a film over the sand bed. The LPS don’t seem happy about it

Water parameters

Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrites: 1 ppm (or more than that)
Nitrates: 20 ppm
Phosphates: 0.01 ppm
Alk: 8.5 dKH
pH: 8.2
Salinity: 35 ppt

The sure way to know what you are facing is to look at the algae under the microscope.

If you need help,  pm me.

How long yr tank had been running?
From the look of it.Yr tank is facing with diatoms.
U may wan to create mre water flow/movements in yr tank.

Have been running it for close to a month. Yup have increased the flow already and manually blow the diatoms off the sand bed.

That is very true. I was changing water yesterday day, and filtered the water with filter floss, the stuff seems to be able to go through the floss and aggregate. They are starting to look stringy and with air bubbles on them. Guessing they are Dinos now

I have dosed live phytoplankton and tisbe/apocyclops pods in hopes for increasing the diversity of organisms in the water.

Should I try using Vibrant / MB7, read that these two can be effective. (Trying to do it the more natural way rather than using chemicals).

Well,  my take is,  trying remedies without identifying the problem is just as likely to aggravate the problem as revolving it.

Hmm that is true. I was thinking of dosing MB7 because I was initially dosing prodibio on a daily basis (freebies from another reefer when I made purchases from him), back then there were no such issues. The Dinos started once I stopped dosing

used to have this issue and added in a UV light. really made a huge difference to the amount of diatoms. but your tank is still relatively new and going through this phase is quite normal. increase your water flow if possible and ride it through. it should last 2-3 weeks
