MH set glass shattered

Dear all,

Anyone experienced the glass covering the MH set shattering? Mine just exploded and shattered into a thousand pieces. Most fell into the tank which I spent the whole night picking up the broken shards. Still got so many that I gave up and decided to leave them there. Is it the heat from the bulbs? Maybe China-made glass isnt very heat proof.

Any suggestions where I can find a glass shop to replace it?

maybe u can try a shop near farmart area.. the shop making tanks one.. guess they will be willing to cut one piece for u ..

sori to hear abt the glass explosion. Why dont u chk with the lfs that u bgt from whether they carry spare parts? May be better fit

not very sure here but, if you are running DE bulb then those glass have to be UV shielded rite?

Do not think the glass is UV shielded. Seems more like normal tempered glass. Is there a possibility that the glass cracked because of the heat generated by the 150W DE bulbs? Now my tank bottom is glittering with all the unremoved glass.

yes u cannot just go to any tank maker and use their glass...

for DE bulbs u have to get a UV coated glass

For SE bulbs u don't have to use it cuz the bulb itself is already coated

Brand of bulb is iwasaki. When I bought them, it was mentioned to be UV cut. Maybe it is not 100% shielded, but at least a certain percentage.

What really happen? Did water splashed on the glass when the MH was on?

Care to share the brand of the MH set?

The set was hung a distance from the water level. My fishes are not that big to have caused big water splashes. Luckily the glass was tempered or it would have hurt someone. As the tank was placed behind the sofa, my dad was sitting near it watching TV. The explosion caused some small shattered pieces of glass to fall on him.

Anywhere to replace the glass? Preferably, those will UV shielding properties.

hmm...you mean the glass shattered with no reason?

What's the brand of the MH?

Maybe you can try kelantan lane. Not sure if they are willing to cut such a small piece for you.

hi.. maybe its water spray from ur tank??? coz the glass is hot and if got cold water splashed onto it it will surely explode...

Yes, that may be the reason. MHs can burn up to more than 100 degrees (not very energy efficient eh?)

Rapid cooling of the glass, especially with the cold water from our tanks will cause it to shatter. Or did your bulb break?

1 week time you will see your corals and fishes deteoriate due to excessive UV rays...............Lose half of my LS in 3days due to crack SE bulb, but mine is 250W so more damage, urs is 150W DE, it will kill slowly if you do not take action fast.

The light set is hung quite high above the water line. Water splashes from my small fishes will not be able to touch the glass.

I have already replaced the glass. Make sure it is tempered glass. You can get a quote from Peng Ji glass merchant or Singapore Safety glass. Look up their contacts on yellow pages.
