Intend to keep a bit of SPS(30%) at the top of the reef, is my 2x150 MH OK?

if not what is the minmum? I do have a chiller and tunze wave maker.

Thanks in advance

I have personally seen someone using 150W for his SPS tank and his SPS grow as well. Some of his SPS is even in mid water.

His setup also uses a tunze wavemaker.

Like what Bro MadMac say, clarity of the water is the key to this.

Hi bro

I previously used 2 x 150W for my 3ft, it looks very bright to me. So shouldn't have any problem with SPS being on top of the reef. However, having 2 MH spread across 4ft length may be a bit more tricky as you may end up having darker zones.

Secondly, what chiller are you using? Is it underpower? If yes, then consider properly before overloading your heat emission... then you will have upgrade your chiller... double whammy :pinch:

I start with 2nos of 150w mh with 2nos of t5 for my previous 4x2x2 sps

tank it started fine but after 2 mnth most of my sps turn dull and start

to brown out. The intensity of 150w is not sufficient if you go for full sps

unless you focus on locating directly under it. Futher to that the illumination

will not give you a wide and fluent spread to cover the whole tank.

I reckon that the best solution if you gonna to stick with 150w, add- in more

T5 as 2 nos really insufficient to keep the sps healthy and maintaining the colour

not forgeting good growth rate. I know a reefer using just t5(8 tubes) for his

sps tank.

For me, In using 3x 250w with 2 t5 actinic for my 4'x2.5'x2' currently.

IMO, no problem at all. but some might not showing their true colors only......

Then that's a major problem... what's the purpose of keeping SPS and not be able to see their true colours? :pinch:

Sorry, I didn't check this thread earlier. The person tank is a 2LX2BX1.5H using just 1 150W-10K Giesemann Nova II lightset.

Light is placed abt 8inch off the surface. The SPS are placed in mid water level.

Light do play a part in browning out but the biggest culprit is the nutrient level.

Suggest you try Monti first. They are more easy in tank with a bit of nutrient. IMO, i think they prefer tank with some nutrient.
