Marine12,

Welcome to SRC, where we teach 'responsible reefkeeping'! :D

Can you first tell us more about your tank specs and water parameters? We have to narrow down the possibilities.

 it's still acclimating.

normally when u buy gonoipora esp. flowerpot(jewel), look out for dead heads.

any dead head will give the coral to a death sentence even if u see it opening in the shop.

or else u can wait for a few days to see it open up slowly.

When it acclimate to ur tank, it can explode to a very big size monster.

dun have to worry now. just put in at somewhere with low current.

and let it acclimate there. dun keep shifting ur coral.

it will slowly open up for u.

at the same time keep a lookout for ur water parameters.

Cheers.

the flowers are slowly coming out.. hmm.. still got a lot to go

they are not extending that much though.

no deadheads

water parameters are as follows:

ammonia - 0 ppm

nitrite - 0ppm

nitrate - 0 ppm

kh - 9

ph - 8.1

calcium - 450

magnesium - 1280

hmm... guess i have to wait? does a coral need time to acclimatise?

i mean i thought that fishes do rite?

All my fishes are fine

tsk...tsk..

water flow through the coral is medium.i have two seio 820 wavemakers.

i moved the coral to the sandbed today and reduce the flow.

it was originally on my lr sitting halfway through.

how long does it take for flowerpot to open up?i mean, does everybody have this problem of coral not opening up?

hmmm....:)

rx gab was right when he said that gonioporo needs time to acclimate provided also that the conditions are also good.

mine has exploded... :)

and one of my clarkii clown is disturbing it by sitting on it.it is using it as its substitute anemone .sigh....,

Hi there bro marine 12,

do try to adopt some more white lighting within the spectrum range of 6500k to 14000k for your gonio, as though actinic and blue lightings, regardless of their source whether T5, PC or VHO, do not provide sufficient light in the correct spectrums for the photosynthesis of the zooxallanthae cells in the goniopora sp. over time, without a light source they can "feed" on, the zoox will die or be expelled out of the colony.

bro chaniz, i think that if your gonio's behaviour is occasional, then dont worry too much about it, as this could just be a reaction to achieve osmotic balance between the internal fluids in the coral, and the external body of water as gonios need to absorb water to expand. alternately, this could be a reaction to low oxygen levels, where the coral is expanding its surface area to better facilitate gas exchange. if this persists though, i would suggest trying to increase the flow slightly around the coral because, from your picture, it looks like the flow rates are pretty low.

i used to keep a goniopora species specific tank, so i learned some things via trial and error plus observation- hope my two cents worth helps somewhat ya.

cheers,

ian
