hi guys, im wondering if i can start a nano marine tank with a 30 (W) x 34 (L) x 37 (H) tank.. its a boyu all-in-one tank.. meaning it does have an IOS filter behind. i have never been in marine before but has been playing freshwater for years.. i do not have any space for any bigger tank and this is the biggest i can get.. filter flow rate is 400l/hr. temp of tank maintained at 28C with fan..

i wonder if i can keep some sexy shrimp, a pair of small clownfish, some zoas and mushroom? can the tank survive well without protein skimmer but have weekly WC?

thanks.

definitely possible....u probably would do better with a additional wavemaker and take note of the evaporation rate if u use a fan....they will give yr salinity levels a big headache.....a pair of clownfish pretty controversial in such a small tank but with gd maintainence and weekly water change it's likely possible....but the way is the light PL lighting.....?

and ya welcome the sgreef....!

hope u will enjoy the wonders of the great ocean...

issit a must to add another wavemaker? first its ulgy and then it builds up heat.. was hoping 400L/hr pump will be enough.. if clownfish is not recommanded, do you have any nice fish in mind? thanks.

hi goondoo, saw your tank in AQ, very nice indeed.. whats defector?

hmm.. if thats the case, will get a small nano wavemaker then.. how long would cycling take?

Hi Bro,

Welcome to SRC! thumbsup.gif

You can check out the numerous nano tanks of the members in SRC to give you a better understanding on equipments used, rock scaping, stocking etc...

the below few are the best!

thanks raydiative for those links.

oh.. now i know.. haven't really confirm that i will be starting a marine tank.. still deciding..

anyway, above that tank is my 422 aro tank.. you guys think i can drip water into this tank directly from that aro tank to replace evaporated water from fan? my aro tank's water quality is very good.. bioload low too.

thanks bro, just a student here with budget... therefore need to do lots of research.. you see i joined this forum nov 07 and had been occasionally reading about marine tanks.. this few day chance upon a few nano marine tanks and the itchy comes again..

Not acting humble, but seriously there are a lot of very nice nano tanks in this sub section. If you wanna single anyone out, then the 2 tank threads above are a great inspiration if you ignore all the tcss lol.

Welcome to the forum btw, bro evo. From the corals you have expressed interest in, I think strong flow is not really necessary. Instead of adding a wavemaker, you can change the return pump to ~800l/h... double the turnover and the increased flow should be sufficient, save some space too.

Invest in a better pump that generates less heat, cos the boyu stock pumps can really heat up the tank by a bit. I don't know the dimensions of your tank, but I think a Rio pump is cheap and energy efficient, the lower models are quite compact too.

thanks binosage for your reply, your tank is really nice! a pity that IOS area is small, i bought a dymax PH400 pump today.. 400l/hr.. same flowrate as boyu, only 5W usage while the boyu is 11watt.. is there a 800l/hr pump that is just as small as the dymax and boyu one? too big cant fit in..

Bro, what's the dimension of your IOS compartment for pump? The Dymax pump sounds decent, you can use it and observe during the cycling period. Anyway since you are planning to keep just clownfish and soft corals, a temperature of 30 degrees and below will do, something a fan can easily achieve.

those are expensive skimmer.. haha.. was thinking if the jebo should be cheap and would be a good replacement for the wave maker.. does it skims well? i cant find any reviews on this product.

so its relatively doable?

any idea if this is a good replacement for wavemaker?

My link

replacement for wavemaker? bro i suppose you know the functions of the two items and you are using the return of the skimmer to act as a wavemaker right?

nonetheless i still think its good for you to get a small wavemaker.. like a K nano... think it would be good for water circulation within your tank to prevent detritus buildup... i'm using 2 K1 in my JBJ nano..

Bro for your tank size don't need skimmer. Just do 10-20% water change every 2-3 days will be good.

skimmer and wavemaker are 2 different pieces of equipments serving 2 purposes. You still need a wavemaker to circulate water in your tank, providing the 'current' for your corals. The return of a skimmer is not powerful enough or provide a wide enough flow for that.

oh.. i was thinking since this jebo skimmer has a flow rate of 900l/hr i thought that it might provide enough flowrate for the corals since i also have a 400l/hr pump running?

nope.. it doesnt really work that way... my pump flow rate is at 2700l/h and with 2 K1 at 1000l/h.. my tank is roughly a 1.5 cube... so i think yours is not sufficient.. lol..

anyway another alternative is to get a stronger return and use the hydor deflector if you do not wanna add a wavemaker..

choose yr livestock wisely ,limit yr feeding and a skimmer will not be required(still need water change)

keeping yr parameter stable would be more important imo.

get better equipments at the initial stage will in fact save u more $$ in the long run,dun need to upgrade equipment in future..

can always get 2nd hand one.

thanks, will get a wave maker then..

ok.. so the equipments will be as followed :

1ft cube tank with IOS filter filled with media.

fan to keep tank at 27 - 29C

live sand - How many KG needed?

live rock - How many KG needed? where to find? i got no car since im student..

lighting will be 15watt FL(new tube)

coral i intend to keep only zoas and mushrooms. any other easy to maintain coral like the 2?

fish - maybe clownfish and shrimps, undecided yet.. can keep hermit crabs?

wavemaker - how many l/hr is recommanded?
