Allowable loading per Socket

Hi guys,

I read from earlier thread that alloable amphere per socket is 13Amp.

Is this the limitation for all HDB flat? My flat is 20+ yrs old.

As there is only 1 main socket near my tank, all required power is drawn from that one source with the aid of extension cords.

Any information is much appreciated :thanks:

the 13A limit is on the plug. Your household MCB should be 20A.

I'm quite curious as well. can anyone advise regarding this as well ? Currently my tank is also drawing about 1000W when chiller kicks in. Is it ok or hazardous ?

1000w is drawing about 5A only..so no issue  !

the 13A limit is on the plug. Your household MCB should be 20A.

Some house (like mine) the MCB is at 30A for living room while the bed room is at 20A.

For example, MCB for living room is at 30A.

It means all electrical applicances in the living room should not exceed 30A of usage.

However, the TS concern is the individual socket which is limited by the 13A plug as mentioned by Goondoo, not by the MCB.

Thus all applicances to the socket (thru the extension cord) should not exceed 13A.

Not to worry though, so long total power does not exceed ~2800W should be fine (based on Power = Volts x Current).

Any electrical guy to confirm if my AC power calculation is correct?

Cos i based on my previous knowledge from school.

An approved plug/extension should be able to handle a total load of (230x13) = 2990W safely.

If you are "kiasi" like me, adding another factor of 70%, it should still be able to handle 2093W easily.

On the other hand, it is not easy to determine the load. Some loads (especially motors, such as hand drills) can use up to 6 times or more power during start up.

I remember the MCB do not exceed 20A in normal household.

6A for lighting and ceiling fans,

16A for air-con compressors (water heaters too IIRC),

20A for general sockets.

Good discussion here.

I suppose I have confirmed my 13Amp limitation per socket. As of now, my wattage consumption is still within the limit.

The only concern I have will be the use of extension cords via a multi plug on the main socket. I guess there's nothing I can do except to get an electrician to install another wall socket. But will be quite a bit of chore :snore:
