Rabbit fish or 'new year fish' is another family with venomous spines, their fins, esp. dorsal are sharp and extremely painful when you get pierced ... got pricked by a 2" juvenile when net casting and the throbbing pain lasted for a few hours

While I was researching on beginner soft corals, I read up that Zoanthus (button polyps) and Palythoa species, which are popular soft corals, are actually highly toxic. If their toxins enter the bloodstream (maybe cuts on fingers or accidentally rubbing eyes) it can easily cause death. I added a link to wikipedia for easy reading. Other websites also report similar info. Might want to be careful just in case!

yah! I read about it too..... but some sources say that only some species are really toxic, while some are not? Not sure also, can any pro zoas hobbyists validate this information?

On dealing with them, apparently it's best to frag them with gloves, eye protection. & must wash hands well after handling them

Got pricked by my diadema urchin a few weeks back while doing tank maintenance. Finger still feels sorta weird now cause I got pierced along the side where the skin was pretty thin. Mild swelling that went away after a week. From my knowledge the spines of diadema urchin species are slightly venomous. probably not as bad as a Rabbitfish’s dorsal spine venom though
