Haha... I added a couple of new fishes, just lazy to post pics. No corals yet. Have been busy with tank transfer at home, plus reservist training and overseas trip, so limited time to spend on the office tank. This sand dollar didn't make it after I added a new one. It was probably out-competed for food I guess... its after all a very small tank.

its interesting to note that the yasha goby only start's hovering and go on "watch-dog" mode when the shrimp is out of the burrow.

when the shrimp goes back in, the yasha just assumes back it's nonchalant pose. and hardly moves.

shrimp back out, it hovers again, and looks out.

really interesting video. i've never noticed this behavior before and only realised it after watching this video

Does the yasha need to be kept together with the shrimp? Will it survive without it?

Lol... I wished.

Absolutely no problem. Both can survive on its own just fine. They only form a symbiotic relationship when they are together.

I can't remember if I've mentioned it or not, but I did get another Yashia to pair up with my existing one some time back, so here are some photos of the trio.

The snail was swiftly knocked off its "feet" when it came too close to their den. It was a lol moment... :D

This is a rather slow tank thread, as I was busy meddling with my home tank on top of reservist training and traveling overseas. I'm very grateful to my colleagues who helped me take care of my tank while I was away. Hope to start adding some corals soon to put some colour into the tank. Cheers! ^_^

I used to have one but didn't survived for long. They are nice fish to keep though.

I can't seem to find the Gessingeri now, so I hope it is still alive but hiding.

G goby !!!! I missed mine.

they are very hardy. likely hidding. they usually come out when your lights are just switched off.

I used search for mine with a torch light. They will always take the same route too... so once you detect them, just ambush them around the same area.... they will always return to the same spot via the same path.. in a small tank.

Sigh... I'm not too optimistic though... I took out all the rocks the other day and didn't find it. The only place I have not search is the burrow. Then again, why would the Yashias and pistol shrimp allow it to share the same place...? I won't conclude anything, just that chances are not high.

I noticed something interesting today. While feeding the fishes, one of the Yashias took some food in its mouth, went back into the burrow and spat it in for the pistol shrimp. All the while, I had the impression that the shrimp would take care of the home and food, while the fishes guarded it. Little did I know that their relationship is deeper than that. Very cool trio!

nice! haha! making me excited to embark on my yasha project soon!

btw, is it normal for yashas to pick up food off the substrate? or are they more of the "attention-towards- drifting-food" kind?

Interesting that you've asked. Normally, for fishes with the lower jaw longer than the upper jaw, logically, their bone structure enables the "scooping" effect, so picking up stuff from the substrate should be natural for them. However, my pair ignores the food that falls on the sand bed. They will rush for food that slowly drift down the water column. Of course, the pistol, snails and hermit will take care of the rest.
