  1. The canister filer you are using is a little undersized.

I started off using a 1200l/hr canister filter for my 1st setup and that's about the same size as your current tank. That would create more turnover and flow within a 2ft tank. I used ceramic rings and coralchips, it did served me well then. You could use biohome if you want.

With that said, it would be wise to perform maintenance to the canister regularly to prevent builtup of detritus within.

  2. IOS runs much deeper than EOS and it tends to settle detritus in the long run, but it just takes up part of your main tank space.

EOS sticks out like a sore thumb, but if you have additional cabinet space to mask it away it is fine. Alternatively have it behind the tank, but you will also need to move the tank further out. Additional space is the key.

  3. I have been utilising the main tank overflow (with/without T off, depending on how many overflow pipes you have going into your sump) straight into the skimmer, and another one to the filtersock. Gravity can help feed your skimmer with a good controlled flow.

Too many pumps tend to contribute heat to your sump which in turn takes more energy off your chiller.

  4. chey...I thought you have a new project coming along :P

Depending on the tank inhabitants, the lightings and chilling requirements are different wor...

Would opt for, this would easily fit $500.

    - reef octopus skimmer (with you mentioning a sump setup, a in-sump would perform better than a hang on back)

    - hailea chiller

    - a decent reliable pump

    - 4 x T5 24w

    - wavemaker (sunsun, seio or hydro would be a good start)
