  1. if you want fast effect, dosing sugar with a working skimmer will reduce the NO3 in few days. but it will rise again whenever you stop. some friends tried and proven it works :)

Yes, the 'sugar method' works for me. It easy, low cost , very fast action but come with some limitation i.e changes to your PH if you don't proceed it carefully.

Try to search for 'sugar method' ; thinks is initiated by user nick 'lizard'. :D

  2. Hi tj,

If you have your livestocks in a stable tank for quite a while then I believed they will be quite resilent. A quick change of water & anything to reduce stress will let your livestocks in better stead.

I got quite a similar experience last Friday morning when I just stepped out for work.

My external filter connection to the chiller suddenly gave way & water from the tank started gushing within the cabinet and into my living floor. It was at least 30 min before my family members realised my living floor was flooding with the tank water. By then the tank water left on 1/4 and those soft corals above were drying up. I was contacted only 2 hrs later and asked my family member to put whatever removeable livestock into a pail.

I came back around 3pm and try to put things in perspective. I found the water had slipped into the main power socket (causing breaker to tripped) and the chiller as well. It was almost 5pm when i changed the power sockets, bought seawater & refilled my tank. However my chiller was not working caused it had a lot of moisture from the water. It was only 2 days later that the chiller started to work again.

Luckily most of the my livestocks managed to survive the ordeal and slowly recuperating. I guessed one of the most important aspect is the 'hardware'; make sure there is little or no chance in our setup to cause those preventable failures such as leakings, electrical problems, etc. With those in control, we will be able to concentrate on the 'software' parts which typically are more challenging.

    All the best.

  3. Had a craving for good crispy prata this morning and thought of the Jalan Kayu original Tha ***. The last I visited them was at least a year back.

Price for the prata remains affordable with normal @ $0.60 & egg @ $1.30.

However the quality I perceived had dropped drastically. Even the one at my house coffee shop tasted better.

The normal prata was small and not crispy and a little cold.

The egg prata was worst, slightly bigger, egg not evenly distributed and not hot.

The curry dip (normal w/o chicken or mutton) was pretty dilute.

I do not know why the quality had dropped very much probably because of nearby competition or change of ownership. Even the one next to Aquarmarine is better. I expect the quality to be comparable to the one at Suntec convention ground floor kopitiam (which is popular in the morning as the price is rather reasonable)

I like crispy normal prata, squarish thick fluffy egg prata with thick hot curry sauce. Any recommendation near Pasir Ris ? :D

  4. octo, bubble and hammer need very pristine water condition to survive

My experience with bubbles is that they are a lot more resilent than the rest of the lps corals even when NO3 hovers around 40ppm for a long time.

  5. Very sad my 2.5 years (since April 2003) Red Prata is wasting away, probably won't last thru the weekend. Bought for about $40 then it had gone thru several bad patches but everytime it survived & came back stronger. About 2-3months I notised it was not opening as big as usual and not wanting to eat. I tried shifting it to several locations but condition remained the same . It got smaller and smaller and last week it accidently fell off from a rock & had a bad tear. It never recovered since. The flesh is breaking now and I don't think it can survive past the weekend.

    Anyone can HELP :cry2:

Attached 1st series of photo from April 03 to 04

    2nd photo just last month

3rd photo this morning - left it under shade

  6. yesterday i reading reading about nitrate reduction using sugar on the forum.. then itchy hand, put in 2 table spoon into my 110L tank. now... wah... water damm murky. how how how? change water ah?or my protein skimmer too weak.

Try to change 70-90% of your water now and let the water stabilise for a few days. Then you might want to try the 'Sugar' method again, this time try adding 2-3 teaspoons first (if you NO3 is around 35-50ppm).
