  1. Hi all, need some advice on a lighting upgrade. Been looking at my mushrooms and Hammer and they don't seem to be opening up when my light is on.

Currently using a cheap dymax Rex-2 2ft set and the output is only 15W.

Anyone can recommend an upgrade within the budget of $50 - $80? I know it's little but got budget constraints.

Even better if someone has a second hand 2ft light set to let go.

  2. Usually a brown film will indicate too much bacteria. Can be caused by overdosing on bacteria, carbon dose etc.

Roger. Thanks for the input! Been dosing bacteria once every 3 weeks. Maybe that's why. Thanks thanks. I'll decrease the dosage and hope it goes away.

  3. Hi all, need help to identify this brown film that's currently growing in my refugium. It leaves an oily residue on the surface of the water, slimy looking. It's over growing the algae that's on the rocks even.

I previously had diatom problem but I switched to ro/di water so I don't think these are diatoms.

Current water param, nitrate 40ppm, phosphate 0. Also battling red slime algae in the main tank but recently seen abit less of that. I do weekly water changes.

  4. Just blow on all the live rocks just before you do your water change. The red slime will be easily blown off, siphon it away.

    Cheers,

    James

Wahahahaa! Looks like a tsunami went through my tank. Red slime keeps coming back though. Just bought a sand sifting starfish to see if he can help with the problem

  5. Hi all, does anyone have any low nutrient plants to give?

I am currently trying out caulerpa in my refugium for about 5 months now but it doesn't seem to grow very well. Previously tried chaeto but the whole lot just turned white after a month. Tested my phosphate which is on the lowest band on the test kit but nitrates about 50ppm. Don't know if caulerpa not able to grow well in these low phosphate conditions.

Currently the live rocks in my refugium are growing all sorts of green stuff on it so it's just the caulerpa that doesn't do well

  6. I do bring my wife to lfs, but we always end up with the picky fish (eg mandarin, ruby dragonnets, longnose filefish). Still searching for the ideal fish.

Love the flame angel but I'm starting to keep zoas, mushrooms and currently have a hammerhead coral. Heard they aren't reef safe?

Got a cleaner shrimp. Flame hawk ok around him?

  7. Hi all, I'm battling this patch of red slime algae on my live rock and substrate. I have finished a whole box of ultra life red slime remover. The algae has completely gone off my sand bed but there are very stubborn spots on my live rock.

Just got my ro/di unit and did one 30% water change. Planning on doing more water changes.

But as it is, the algae wasn't completely wiped out. Should I remove the live rock totally? I bought a different brand of remover, chemiclean, just in case.
