  1. Phewbacca, Besides learning more on water chemistry as others have suggested, I urge you to read up on the livestock you are considering for purchase. IMO, and I believe many other responsible aquarists out there share my views, you should avoid: Tangs, Angels, Butterflies, Groupers, Cleaner wrasse, parrotfish ... and this list is not exhaustive. The key reasons are: 1 they require large tanks or 2 they require superb water quality or 3 they are difficult to maintain for long in captive environment or 4 they should be left in the wild (eg: cleaner wrasse) or 5 ALL of the above reasons. Hope this helps.
  2. That new 'apartment' wasn't bought. It was vacated by the previous tenant who decided to move on. I'm going to be out hunting for a 'penthouse' this week just in case anyone wants to upgrade. My blue-leggeds loiter everywhere. Even climb vertical rock walls. Great at munching on algae (although I won't count on them ... too slow and too little) and whatever the fish won't want. BUT, they killed my snails! I have pix of one of the murder taken when the crime was being commited. Can post if anyone wants to see the gruesome details.
  3. Well, if you wish to continue keeping it as your water pet, you will need to give it what it needs. If you don't want it, then give it away to someone who can provide for it. I think any living organism that dies in your water will foul it. larryng21, pls read up on potential purchases and know what you are in for before you commit. You can ask the lfs, but my advice is to verify it yourself too. Don't be concern that it will be gone when you want it - there's always the next time ....
  4. Thanks. Picking it up on Mon, but probably won't be able to do anything until two weeks later ...
  5. Jason, there is a specie of bannerfish (accepted as belonging to the butterfly family) that is reef-safe. Check out www.wetwebmedia.com... If I recall correctly, it is from the red sea and is known commonly as the Schooling Bannerfish (difficult to differentiate) . I bought a bannerfish but, considering its price, it won't be from the red sea but indonesia - in which case it is not reef safe. This bannerfish is in my 85G FOWLR and feeds on mysis, brine and lettuce/nori readily. If flakes are small enough, it will take a little too. My FOWLR LR has lots of colonial polyps. I also have two small piece of rocks with propagated shrooms and green stars. So far, I have not seen this bannerfish disturbing them. Its a beautiful fish especially when it swims - but you do need to provide a large tank for it to swim!
  6. Hi Bawater Never too late! Thanks for the reply. To answer your questions: 1 no sump - unfortunately 2 2ft but 80 litres (its an oversized two footer) 3 will put eheim 1260 in cabinet below tank, plumbed for external use 4 yes, head pressure approx. 3 ft I noted your points. Guess I will try with one Y-joint and if its still too strong, maybe add another Y-joint to the other end of the scwd. If this still fail, I guess I will have to spend money (again) on a weaker pump. Thanks!
  7. Actually, 3.785 litre = 1 US gallon
  8. I have been soaking food in home-made garlic about 3-4 times a week. Am considering alternating this with vitamin supplements. Does anyone have any experience/opinion on vitamin supplements (like Selcon?)? Thanks. BTW, I did a search in this site but turned out nothing.
  9. Yes, good luck. You may want to do some research first before buying any butterfly (even for a FOWLR tank). Butterflies are generally hard to care for and most simply starve to death. IMO, the only 'butterfly' that will survive in our home tank is the bannerfish - but even then only if you have a sizeable tank because this fish needs lots of space. My bannerfish takes mysis, brine and lettuce. But, pls do not mistaje the bannerfish for the moorish idol - the moorish idol should be left in the wild.
  10. Piero, Clearly you did not quarantine your fish first. You may want to look into this good, necessary practice before you put a lousy specimen in that kills through diesease or starve to death because it won't or couldn't eat what you offer. I'm sure that along the way, you will be glad you quarantine new fish.
  11. Tanzy, How do you measure borates?
  12. bawater, My scwd is arriving week after next. I intend to use it for my 2ft/80litre reef tank. Tank specs/inhabitants: 2ft/80litre prizm ps 2 inches #1 substrate about 12-15 kg LR 2 edens for circulation (in use for 11 mths - NEVER failed me) leathers, mushrooms, brains, polyps, bubble, torch, galaxea, fox My idea is to use a spare eheim 1260 (2400l/hr) plumped to be used externally. I suspect the flowrate even with head pressure may be too strong for a tank this size. So, I am looking at having the flow go through the scwd, one end goes straight into the tank; the other end connects to a Y-joint and splits into two returns. Based on your experience/knowledge, do you think this sort of 'unbalanced' return will work with the scwd? Or should I even bother to connect a Y-joint? Thanks for your comments. FF
  13. Just curious - is the prizm doing its job well? I would think 10 of those tiny ps will be needed for 215G.
  14. Another note - the Sohal may just harasse/ kill new fish that you may add later, more so if its a surgeon or tang. I was very tempted by this fish for my 85G FOWLR, but changed my mind when I learned more about it. Its territory in the wild is 6-8 sqm per fish! How old is your tank - everyone's asking ....
  15. All those electrical wiring and points at the back and dangling is hazardous. Get them out of the way of accidental water spill. Make sure wires are 'looped'. Better solve this first then worry about your stand ...
  16. There's still Thursday's bigger draw .....
  17. I know nuts about SPS (other than its not for me), but I suffer from CFD too - Chronic Financial Deficiency ..... Doctor's prescribed some Vitamin M ..... I just bought Toto today .... Going to Singaporepools.com now ...
  18. I've just checked out the on-line store I am ordering products from. They don't have accessories for the Prizm - they sell only complete units. Sorry! I don't want to order from other store because I trust this one and have been ordering drygoods from them whenever I go to the US or my US colleagues come to Singapore - no shipping freight to pay! But if you know which on-line store I can order from, let me know and I will check out the freight (freight usually kills all price advantage) by Monday becuase the stuff gotta reach him before he leaves!
