  1. My current tank is a 3ft x 1.5 x 1.5.

Have this Jebao cannister and a Red Sea Skimmer.

Would changing to a high-powered cannister help?

The reason I am asking or sound keen to retain a cannister filtration is becuase I already have a 3 ft tank and a cannister filterand do not want to spend any more extra if I can still keep a simple marine tank.

FYI - I was actually advise by a popular LFS somewhere near the JK area that a cannister filter is good enough for a 3ft tank. If I had known better then, would have ignore their advise and gone with a sump instead. Since I already have the stuff, thought I give it a go :)

  2. Hi Guys,

    I currently already have my 3ft x 1.5 x 2.5 tank using a cannister Jebao filter and have a Resum 450 chiller.

Was wondering whether I can do the following without having to move to a sump tank:

    1) Fill Cannister #1 with only wool to filter the detritus and outflow to cannister #2

    2) Fill Cannister #2 with Bioballs/coral chips and outflow to chiller before returning water to tank.

Would that type of filteration be ok/suitable

Still want to reuse my 3ft tank and whatever I have to have a FOWL tank with minimal corals.

    Please advise.

  3. Hello all,

The sad news is all my fishes has died one by one.

Dont really know why as my water parameters are ok. NO2 and NO3 are within safe levels.

Am having a mostly FOWLR in my 3 x 2.5 x 2.5 tank. Using canister filter.

The best part is that my shrimp just lay eggs and another shrimp is preggie!!!

Anyone has any idea why this happen?

  4. Hi all,

Am seriously considering purchasing MH (with the support on the tank) for my tank (corals & fishes). Understand that they are around $350 for the HILUX brand.

Anyone of you think that I should skip MH and go for something else.

Appreciate your comments as I may want to get the lights sometime this weekend or just after the New Year.

  5. Hello reefers,

Need some advice. I notice that the corals tend to 'close' up when the lights are turn off at night. So actually that means that the corals only open when we the lights are turned on.

Well in order to really enjoy them when they are opened and in their beauty, you will have to wait till they really open up after about 2 hours when the lights are turned on.

Is there any other way to ensure that my corals open up "permanently"? To have this would also have to mean that I need to turn on my lights 24x7 right?

    hmm................

  6. Hi all,

Am using Aquapharm 5-in-1 Zooplankton feed for the corals and I am feeding them like only once a day.

Am having Hammer, brain, bubbles, gonipora, sponges, plate corals in my tank.

Was wondering what other suitable feed I can use to make my corals grown stronger and bigger? I am also using Iodide, Strontium, Calcium from Aquapharm.

Is feeding them once a day sufficient? Or should I feed them twice a day, morning and evening.

    Please advise.

  7. Hi all,

Am seriously considering getting the HILUX MH for my 3 ft reef tank. Went to a few shops and noted that the price range is about $430.

I really do not want to get the hang down from the ceiling kinda but looking for MH with the stand one the tank.

Budget is a concern and any fellow reefers know where I can get them at a lower price that $430? Second hand?

I also understand that there a number of different MH HILUX. Is that true cos the model I saw at 2 shops seems to be different.

    Please advise.

  8. Hi all,

I am think of upgrading my current tank lighting (flourscent blue and white tubes) with something stronger and useful for my reef tank.

    Tank size = 3ft x 1.5ft x 1.5ft with fishes and corals.

    I also have a chiller.

Should I just not be fussy and stick to my current lighting or move to something more effective. Some said MH is better but I guess I really would not know.

Please advise on the cost, nos of lights required. Any LFS having a good deal for such lights??

    Thanks!

  9. Hi all,

How many of you reefers are using other marine salt besides Coralife? Was told that Coralife salts are not very good as they contain higher than normal levels of nitrates. Is that true?

Seems to be true cos my Nitrate levels do not seem to be heading south. Although i did not perform a water change, still cycling for about 1 week, I added in a whole bottle of Bacteria solution (Stress Zyme) to aid in the lowering of the NO2.

Furthermore, if I were to change the water, need to use Coralife salts to maintain the salinity. ...NO2 gonna shoot up again right?

How? Should I just dump Coralife salt and use Marine Environment?

Then again......what else can i do to bring down my NO2. Am using RS skimmer with Jebao cannister filter.

    Please advise

  10. Hi all,

anyone of you using a Red Sea Surface Skimmer add-on to your RS Skimmer? Was told by a LFS that the surface skimmer (retail $35) add-on is to draw the surface water in and remove the layer of "oil" commonly seen in a tank with corals.

Also helps in light penetration to the bottom of the tank since the surface water will be clear and clean.

I will be having a tank with fishes and coral and wondering whether I really need that add-on....expensive man!!

Anyone know of anywhere else that the RS surface skimmer add-on can be obtained at a lower price?

    Appreciate all replies.
