  1. hi.... been using one for the past three months.... DIY one...... can't really assess how good it is, cos i also have the seachem *denitrator* (for anerobic bacteria to grow on it) in my sump......

just want to add that my nitrate fell from 50 to between 0 and 12.5..... a 3 foot tank with 5-6 tangs and other fish - severely overstocked..... :) and i feed them more than 6times a day......

  2. Hi bro,

I have brown aglea too growing on my rocks and corals. In fact, they are a soft films that can be easily wipe off. Are these diatom ?

U mentioned that we can use rowaphos to get rid of it. is that a chemical ? where to buy ?

hi bro... the soft purple film is slime algae and the brown stuff is diatom. rowaphos is a media that helps you to get rid of phophate which is necessary for the growth of these unwanted stuff.... it's quite ex considering that i'm a student..... i think anyone of the the sponsor LSF should carry it.

  3. Obviously something is not really right with your tank..... IMO you should stop adding tangs.... They are ich prone and produce tons of waste... If you filteration system is not good enough, trouble could occur especially when you keep loading tangs...... IMO remove some tangs and stick with maybe 1 and a few other fish.... Surprise your nitrate is at this lvl..... get salifert to double check cos i dun really think your nitrate is at this lvl......

                                                                             My 2 cents DA :peace:

hi bro. thanks for your input...... i finally know what diatoms are.... exams are appraching so i can't really do much to the tank...... was thinking of giving one tang away, but catching anyone one of them would be tough.... i'm keen to get rid of the diatoms and slime algae, and replace them with beautiful coralline though.

i feed them several times a day and you are right, they are producing tons of wastes... esp when i stand before the tank to feed them.. quite unsightly at times...

measuring nitrate with tetratest. checked again today, it's 12.5mg. the kit running out anyway, i'll heed your advice to go for a salifert. and i will keep a close lookout on ich....

    thanks

    Rocky :heh:

  4. Since you are keeping lps only, you can supplement with t5 blue actinics to balance out the color.

Alternatively, you can change your bulb to 14k.

This will give you a blue-ish look.

i was thinking of using a 14k too... but i notice that light that goes into the tank appear less blue (more yellow) than it is before going in. for instance, last time my slightly yellowish 6500k that goes in comes out much yellowish. then a white 10kK goes in and appears slightly yellowish... so i suspect that if the same thing may happen for a 14kK. so that's why i thought a blue bulb may be good.... it'd be nice if they haf something like 17kK

    :)

    thanks bro.....

  5. Hm.. 150W for a 3x1.5x2 is a little on the low side, more so if you switch over to 20k... my 2.5x1.5x2 uses 250W of 20k and 2x24W of 10k T5s...

I was originally running 250W of 20k MH only and the corals (LPS) were OKAY but not that super.. made the upgrade recently so still waiting for results...

ic..... i am currently limited to one choice of bulb and one kind of lighting only cos i got no hood.... supplementing with actinics won't be an option for me in the near future cos i got no space to mount them above my tank...

my tank is narrow and my MH fixture so so fat.... i guess i'll try changing to a 250W 20kK.

no choice, got to compromise a bit... thanks...

pls update me with your results of using a 20kK 250W. :)

  6. if any one could advise.

i have a 150W MH fixture above my 3x1.5x2(H) tank. as i do not have a hood, the MH is the only piece of lighting available for my tank. i'm using a 10kK bulb and it gives my tank a very yellowish appearance. may i know what will happen to my corals if i change over to a 20kK bulb without any T5 supplement. i keep and intend to keep only LPS.

    thanks in advance

  7. have u tried testing for copper?

u use normal pub water? might be the water source or your tap

just my 2 cents no harm testing cuz i think thats the only possiblilty

ya.... PUB water..... is it really that detrimental? testing for copper is quite costly.. furthermore is one test only...... thanks for your advice bro.... :)

  8. juz got a purple tang at LCK yesterday... the fish is not welcome by the brown tang so i had to capture the brown tang and put it in the beta box... the new fish doesnt look comfortable in the tank yet..... so swimming well like other fish......

  9. The amt og tangs in your tank is way too much..... Heavy bio load and also i dun think its right to squeeze that many fish which need ample of space to swim into a 3 footer.... Naturally a scopas tang being zebrasoma would wack a newcomer purple tang which is a zebrasoma too..... You wun see problems for now but once your tangs get bigger and more established, you willsee war.. suggest you remove a few of them instead of adding more....

    My 2cents ;)  ;)

    Thanks DA and the rest...

i will keep a close lookout at them.... and will give one or two away if they are fighting again...i agree my tank is too small for so many tangs.... in the mean time, i'll make plans to upgrade them to a bigger home.... since i love tangs....

    :)
