the pic shows the present condition of my plate, 2wks after buying it.... swollen with shortened tentacles.... orginally looked like any other normal plate when i bought it...
i was told by an lfs owner that the cause of it is very likely from high kH. does anyone else have the same experience?
the experienced uncle suspected that sera kH is prbly inaccurate (kH reading from Sera is 11dkh) and he introduced me a seachem test kit...... seachem measured a kH of 5.5meq/L which converts to dkh value of 15.4 (5.5x2.8 - not sure if this formula is true all the time). this is a high reading but what also confuses me is that the alkalinity of the reference bottle isnt accurate as well..... gave me a reading of 5.0 meq/L(dkh 14) instead of 4.0 meq/L (dkh 11.2) which is the correct reference value....
i'm now very lost..... is my dkH really high 15.4(seachem)?
or the set of seachem test kit is inaccurate cos the reference bottle gave a wrong reading?
or the plate is swollen because of other reasons?
and even if dkh is 15.4, the plate shouldn't swell up like that?.......
thanks for your time reading..... anyone pls advise. i hope find to find an answer.
pH 8.1
kH as above....
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 20
calcium 380
temp 27
salinity 1.023

from its position, doesn't look like its getting any current?
listened to your advice... got an eden 228 rotating powerhead.... circulation looks better then the pump and more even......... i think got to observe a few more days...... =p

Maybe u shd try market prawn and cut into small pcs, than slowely place near to the plate coral mouth.
i tried putting some formula 2 pellets into the mouth... but it din seem to help...... and have been feeding plankton regularly...... do you thing these 2 methods are similar?
-
have u check whether there are any micro bubbles stuck underneath the plate coral? usually thats one of the reasons for the dismise of these corals. these corals ae hardy but once there is a problem like micro bubbles caught under the plate or the sand is too coarse under the plate/being placed on rocks, the tissue may start to receede
learnt it the hard way and lost a 2inch pink tipped one
hi...... i inverted to the plate to check for bubbles.. but dun have..... i oso dunno what to do.... from your experience, is that a sign of dying? the plate is on v fine sand..... is there anything else i can do?
thanks for your advice.....
-
no fish picking on them.. i think got current from the little pump i've at the corner. they move, but very clumsily.... i shall juz feed them with more plankton and see how...
thanks guys for your input.....

nice tank bro... like the lights.... cant help u with the plate though...

this little friend climbed into the overflow box that has been fenced. fortunately it din jam up the outflow pipe... ###### so hard to the glass that i had to spend 1 hr asking for help and to rescue it. this carpet will stay in this KFC tub for few days until i decide whether to put in another tank.
-
remove it by using a credit card to scrap the foot off the glass or tap the foot by using your fingers..U may also like to try using Ice to rub at the foot of the anemone and see if it is able to loosen its suction
thanks thanks. the ice method did work..... it shrank and let loose of the glass.... will keep it in another tank.....

nice and clean look.Double view scaping must be very difficult in an 18inches wide tank, but u've done a wonderful job.Thumbs up and good going.Maybe u can throw in a few more powerheads for circulation??
thanks... powerheads will be my nxt investment.. broke for now..... i'm using a 7w submersible pump to do the job for the time being.....
juz got a cl-650, not as noisy as i expected.... initially, kicks in v frequent. but after using a bigger pump, the interval is 10min/30min... doing a gd job now..... temp is 26+ but corals dont seem to open well.....

smart move...i've always regretted not doing my hood properly..now very troublesome...
i din put a hood cos i tot cleaning algae will be harder with one... i think the tank will look shorter oso with the hood on... and better ventilation....

my anemone has climbed into the overflow box. i dunno how it did it cos i placed a fence above it. now its inside on the glass. and i'm worried that it will block the outflow pipe if it goes down. its ###### on the glass in the box. i tried pulling it but it clings on very strongly. the water level in the box is now to the bottom but anemone is in the middle. i can still reach it but not when it goes deeper.... what can i do? thanks...

Bro, be extra cacreful if you intend to move the tank with water. It might crack.Best to move empty.
i'll take note of that. thanks....

anyone?

HI!
This is what I will do. Put corals and live stock into a pail. Empty out as much water as possible into pails. Get a few friends, shift old tank and cabinet 1m. Put everything back in. Once the new tank arrive, transfer water, live rock, etc over. There shouldnt be a need to wait for system to stabilize.
Hope this helps
got it.... thanks.......

pls pm. thanks.

any one got any idea how to shift (by 1 metre)the tank for upgrade such that the new tank can take the place of the old tank? do i have set up an extra tank to hold the LS while i empty out and dismantle old tank to bring in the new one. thanks.

we are all still learning..
no offence. was trying to help as i thought there was a confusion between cycling the water and establishing a cycle. made the same mistake too myself last time.
-
YUP......STILL CYCLING NOW...ABOUT 5HRS ALREADY
what do you understand of cycling?

ammonia and no2 shd all come down (to abt zeo) in say 3 wks from the start. but nitrates usually build up progresively, unless you have some chemicals to remove it or a mature deep sand bed. the high nitrate reading can be due to the high no2 reading as some nitrate test kits measures the total nitrite and nitrate. how abt putting in a bottle of fritzyme. then start changing water when the cycle is completed to handle the nitrates.
sea chem denitrate reliable not or ?

hi.... i'm using the 1L bottle for my 3 ft tank for the past one wk plus. placed it in this sump compartment where water flow is abt 9L/hr. so far, nitrate has dropped from 25mg/L, approaching 12.5mg/L over the past 1wk. i don't have a better test kit, so i can't give you more precise readings. i'm monitoring nitate once a wk. will keep you updated. but my results may not be accurate becos i added 2 fish ard the time i got the bottle and my slug disappeared from the tank 2 days ago.
i think abt the part being a nitrate factory, i think if the water flowing through it is slow, poorly aerated and certainly not trickling through, then it shouldn't be a problem.
