  1. Think I read somewhere about it being fundamentally wrong as water passes under the light too fast for the UV to work properly.

IMO employing UV in the sump reservoir may make more sense. I believe that is what some LFS are doing.

Just a thought, if the UV nukes a bug partially without totally killing it, wouldn't it become more resilient?

I don't think so. The UV destroys the cells and does not affect them with chemicals that they can become resistant to. Like burning them. Either they are burnt or partially burnt. No one becomes resistant to fire just by being burnt once. :o

  2. any idea how much heat a 175w MH pandent will generate?....i mean the pandent itself not heat transfer to the water...cos i thinking of replacin the metal bracket which is currently holding onto the MH, wif a wooden one....scared it will burn! anyone can share experience? :off::paiseh::whistle

Wood burn and weaken. Most metals do not melt unless at very high temps, should be past 400 deg Celsius at least. I think the wood will break faster.

  3. ......... it is not even opening ..... no way to feed it.

use to be full bloom before I change to MH

I don't think they eat much commercially sold coral food. Most of those are too big (read a lengthy online article on someone dissecting a wild goniopora polyp to examine what it ate).

But anyway, Goniopora polyps can expand at the top while dying from the bottom. That is usually the pattern they die off.

I hope your corals recover soon!

  4. 3v|L,Mar 1 2003, 08:01 PM] Hi all long time never posted already..

Im going to rescape my tank on the March holidays cause my live rock arrangement are quite unpleasant and those LR hidden underneath the other rocks are quite wasted and would like to space them out taller and wider.. Im planning to use eggcrates/light diffusers to stack up my LR just like wat Dino did.

I will move out the LR and Corals into a tub with some water from my tank covering it. For the fish can i leave them in my tank as i dont have any aquarantine tank.. Will those sediment or dirt will affect the fish as alot of sediment will be churned up when i remove those rocks and corals..

Advice and help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you! :thanks:

Yes they most likely will. At the very least they will be stressed out. Fix up the eggcrate so that you can put it into the tank asap when the time comes. You can get a bit of NSW from LFS to fill up a small tub for the fish if they are small. An airpump in it and some ammonia detoxifier handy will assure that things run smoothly.

  5. Look for the fairy wrasse species... there are many of them, all very colourful and reef-safe.

Do not get any other wrasse species as they are in the same league as damsels and clownfishes... aggressive and territorial.

They also become a nuisance by pecking at clams sometimes and they eat cleaner shrimps when they grow big enough.

    AT

Some like the sixline wrasse like eating small shrimp. Otherwise they are charming and energetic fishes.

  6. got 2 snails. not sure what they are. Heard henry mentioned something turbo snails. anyway, i will post a pic later.

the 2 snails are really hardworking and effective. some of the diatoms on the tank wall are gone already.... :yeah:

    I'm happy man now :D

    Check :

    http://www.rshimek.com/odd_critters.htm

    www.reefs.org/hhfaq

to see what it may be.

But it probably is an Astrea or Trochus snail- scroll down and see mine at

    http://aquakeeper.topcities.com/nano_livestock.htm

All my trochus from Reborn died after a while but the astreas are still fine. At least I think they are astreas.

  7. Hello hongqixian,

Thanks for your advices. :thanks: Forgot to mention that I m having filter floss n bio ring inside the canister filter, hope is not affecting your answer. :look:

No, it doesn't. Actually you don't need the bio rings but they don't really cause any harm. Just rinse the filter floss or change it regularly.

  8. Seeing so many picture posted.

Some Coral are banned for import & export, where u guyz bought it from? you guyz pick when diving? Also see diver picture posted here...

Most coral show on the pix posted are BANNED :o

I thought that most people buy chillers because they want to keep hard corals with bright lights. If there are no more hard corals to buy then no one will buy chillers. Chiller industry go bust.

She picks seashells by the seashore.

  9. Thanks Tanzy,

I have been using the same test kit for a long time...the aquamedic one. Normally test kits for Nitrite is quite reliable, right? I'll check for any MIA fish. Assuming it is caused by a dead fish, will it get back to normal after some time. I think I'll just do a little water change and add a bottle of "cycle" in. Is this ok?

I like cycle. It seems to work well at least in the short term and it's reassuring.

  10. I saw one at Petmart selling: by Boyds', the manufacturer of Chemi-pure carbon...issit good? (it goes at 412 per small bottle, so I'd like to have someone who has tried it to recommend ya?)

Also, I see the guys in RC recommending Selcon, and it seems that it is good for enriching food and adding to the tank direct for feeding...where can i get this in SGP? But my guess is that it probably is NOT sold in SGP :(

    Vita Chem.

Not all that great. Cheap vitamin supplements work about the same.

  11. hi,

I was thinking of putting some snails and hermit crabs into my 2footer to help to combat algae, mainly diatoms and hair.

Checked with Marine Life, they have those snails from bali and hermit crab ; i think is zebra.

Can they co-exist in my tank? Will those snails clean up the diatoms ?

also, how many can i put in my tank huh ?

Sorry for so much questions. Thanks for reading.

Most hermit crabs even the zebras will eat snails when they get hungry even when they do not need the shell. I dislike them in a reef tank because the snails always need replacing.

If you mean the white shelled top shaped snail at $1 each, two is just right for a 2ft tank imo. They nibble off some algae and the rest can be cleaned from time to time. Too many snails and they will starve. They do not eat much hair algae.

  12. To all clam lovers/owners out there ....

i have kept clams for the last 4 mths ..... would like to know how to you guys tell whether the clams is growing ?? ... got a few ideas from reading threads at RC but hard to c what exactly they are reffering to especially for a new bird like me .... can someone shed some light on this topic ....

    tanzy ??

    AT???

    Hongixian ....

    SPade ....

    Harlequin ..... ???

When they have intense colour and thrive, they are growing :) no need to worry about growth rate.

As for abalone, they live in quite cold waters. But there are some small species like the Donkey's ear abalone that crawl around eating algae.

  13. from what ive read/heard, circulation plays an important part... there aint a need to clean the sand bed, good circulation would lift sediments off which will find its way into the filters..

Once in a while, stirring up a small part of a non DSB tank sandbed releases lots of dust and organic particles that feed the tank scavengers and some corals like smooth mushrooms. It also makes the sandbed look less messy/dirty and kills nothing. The excess gets sucked up easily into filters and you can take out the filter wool to rinse.

  14. Hi all,

Thanks, I will take note of not over loading the tank. FYI, my purple tang is rather small and so far it is fine. As for the gonipora, it's already in the tank for almost 9 months and it's also fine. the only unfortunate thing is that initially I placed it very near to a bubble and a small patch was stung by the bubble.

I'm feeding the corals with Marine deluxe, Kent phytoplex and microVert and using Coral Accel daily also. So far the sun corals open every morning when I feed and in the night when my lights are off.

FYI, I'm having a DIY 2 ft sump with full tank of water so this maybe the reason of not overloading yet??? Just asking for advise on this also as I'm having mixed answers on whether the sump tank water will constitute to the total water volume. I'm using a Macro PS.

    Thanks and regards :thanks:

The sump is good because it increases the amount of water in your tank, so the fish can stay healthy. But, in the case of tangs and large angels they like swimming wide distances and swimming around in a small tank is not good for them (they can't swim into the sump  ) Also some fish fight over territory.

The sun coral might be okay but sometimes it may not catch enough liquid food, and it only opens up when it senses the food. Try feeding right on top of the polyps with small amounts of chopped meaty food once in a while.

  15. Hi guys,

I am thinking of having a new sump/refugium. In the meantime, can I convert my 2ft quarantine tank into a refugium by adding river sand, LRs & macroalgae? The purpose is to have the 'live sand' ready for my new sump/refugium. Is that workable?

They are 2 things I need advices here: 1.should I carry on running my canister filter (existing one for my quarantine tank) when it is converted into a refugium? 2. Will there be any problems later during the transfer of the 'live sand' to the new sump/refugium? :thanks:

Can, why not? The canister filter should be ok if you clean it regularly. But don't put a dsb in your 2ft if you are going to dig it up again. Put about 2cm sand enough for worms and algae to root in, and put in a rock or two of decorative algae and a light. You can fiddle around and see what temp and conditions the algae like best. If you keep the glass clean, there's no reason why it shouldn't look nice. A refugium does not necessarily have to be overgrown with nuisance algae.

  16. Ever wonder if the low marriage rates in Singapore is due to wrong answers given to fiancees or wives??

Hmmm... perhaps they should consider visiting underwater world or "picnic-by-the-aquarium" at Wisma for next year's romancing Singapore?? :peace:

Wisma has a lot of nuisance algae. Plus, the deep sand bed has dark green, white and black slimy things in it if you look from one of the sides. Years' worth of stuck muck.

  17. Quinine is not a Controlled Drug (CD), CD are barbiturates, opioids, anabolic steroids, some benzodiazepines. You can find quinine in Tonic Water.

As long as you guys don't try to drink it or inject it into your bloodstream, it's OK. Nobody will drink it anyway since quinine is one of the top 10 most bitter substance known to man.

    I see.
