  1. hi guys, i'm an existing freshwater fish keeper but recently have been convert to the dark side of marine. i have some spare tanks which i'm not using and i'm thinking if i can use it to convert to a 2ft FOWLR tank. my main concern is that it's a 2ft X 1.5ft X 1.5ft and it is only 6mm thickness. wonder would this thickness be sufficient. would be doing quite abit of homework before i actually commit to this project.

I ran one of those tank for about 6 months before upgrading to a 3 footer.

Seems to be OK, but YEMV.

Your concern should be on water parameters as its swings extremely fast, especially if you are using fan.

    My 2cts.

  2. Installed a digital meter to find out the actual power consumed over 24hrs.

4.7kWh from yesterday 2pm to today.

From Singapore Powers, per kilo watt hour cost $0.2521 including GST.

My daily contribution should increase by about $1.20 and estimate monthly (assuming 30 days) of about $35 (including GST).

Is this reasonable for a 3 footer?

  3. Couldn't find it from the net. Want to give it away but don't know what fish this is.

The previous owner give it to me and it seems pretty aggressive and extremely agile. Only manage to catch it after draining 80% of the tank's water.

    Thanks a lot!

PS: Please help ID it fast, its still in the tub as I am typing.

  4. Hai,

I think Up to personal preference... May be ppl prefer Percula probably dark color growth more when adult(tri-color :) )... other clownfish keeper can share what they like about percula too....

Ya... Normal Ocellaris Clownfish ~1 - 2 dollor.. and Normal Percula ~8 - 20 dollar... depends sizes and LFS....

    Cheers and Happy Reefing....

if you like pure orange clowns, go for ocellaris.

if you like clowns with plenty of black, go for percula.

true perculas scientific name is Amphiprion percula.

false percula scientific name is Amphiprion ocellaris

It's called false ocellaris because it's not the true A. percula, but resembles it with much similarity except, that it lacks the excess black markings.

    Thanks for the advice!

  5. Anyone know how to tell the different between False and true percula clown fish? Nowaday the quality of false percula like getting better cannot really tell when they r small.

Sorry for a stupid question. Other than the price, what so special about True Percula Clown? I mean I am looking forward to a pair of clown fish and hopefully bright orange color.... would Ocellaris Clownfish be a good choice?

PS: Ocellaris Clownfish should be cheaper right?

    Just some updates:

    Added 250w MH light.

Added a Tunze Wavebox nano and Tunze 6026

Added live rocks from my existing holding tank, decomming holding tank soon...

Rocks were slightly rearrange for caves as priority. The Tunze 6025 aims directly into one on the main access of the caves to create flow within.

I like the new MH lights added, the colour is nice :) Now to search for a cheap'o pump and my purchase for equipments shall be complete (for now, at least)

Was monitoring the power with a digital device, about 500w when chiller is running ohmy.gifohmy.gif

  7. Wonder does algae scrubber pick up sand particle like the magnet cleaner do when going too bottom of tank n thus scratches the tank?

No it won't, its a algae scrubber not a glass magnet cleaner

    I am crying......shocked.gifcry.gif

  8. OMG! this is scary huh... LED lights costs more than LED TV!

tsk tsk tsk... that's how much we love this hobby!

Yeah, I am still fighting mentally to buy a LED light for my tank or a triple level Mcdonald bed for my children.... they still sleeping on the floor..... ooh2.gifcrying.gifooh2.gif

  9. Personally, I find it pretty noisy compared to Aquabee. My HF17 have a constant humming sound. I can't hear it usually as the water splashes sounds supersedes it.

Another thing to note is the ratings, they published are at 0 losses. I am not sure about other brands but my AquaBee 3000L is definitely stronger than my Rio.

Rio HyperFlow magnetic drive aqua pump HF 17

    Flow rate :4500l/hr (0cm); 4140l/hr (30cm); 3190l/hr(120cm); 2500l/hr(180cm)

    Max head : 310 cm

I believe the hose is about 3m and passes through the chiller. Maybe someone can share some experience with this as well.

  10. looks good....

those loose rocks on the bottom, u may want to use epoxy or super glue to stick them at the top so that u can place more corals and detritus will not accumulate at those dead spots...just my suggestion :friends:

If you are referring those on the bottom left...

yea, I am still figuring how to fit them in.... lol...

at last get to see ur tank up and running it been mths liao. :groupwavereversed:

so time to show ur sump setup and equipment, which all of us will be more interested in that area. :yeah:

by the way wat's the height of ur tank my 2.5ft also hard time doing arangement

My tank is of 29" depth. Since its my first time scaping rocks for marine, its indeed back breaking....

There is only one thing running in the sump area and you know better what it is.....

    hey hi bro.

Yours is a 3x2x2? yup it can be real back breaking sometimes scaping these deep tanks. Thats why I love my nano so much... haha.

seems like you have quite a number of flat rocks. try getting more arcing ones or round cavy types.

That will help to break the "bookshelf" look a little.

question: you joined in 2005. This is your 1st marine?

Yea.... the biggest challenge is it look too much like a book shelf. I still have many smaller rocks but they don't really fit in. Still getting ideas from many pictures I can find in the forum.

May took the live rocks in my quarantine tank this weekend to complete the outlook, for the better I hope....

    Technically, yes :P

  11. Always wanted to try out marine. Managed to get hold of a used 3 footer and set up an initial scape (note to self: never get a tank of more than 2ft height again, back really hurts now) of what I had in mind. Iwarna's Victor had been extremely nice for accommodating to my 3 hours request to deliver the NSW (actually, i was just trying my luck, happen that the staff is free and available. Thanks Victor!).

I would not go into the mechanical details. Currently, the return is about 7000l/h, will be powered by a 250w MH (collecting on Saturday) and will be using a Teco TW4 chiller at 28dC.

This is just a quick snap using my phone camera.

More will come after I start adding live stocks....

  12. Tentative Agenda

( I have yet to put detail thoughts to this, will send a more detail agenda once if this workshop is confirmed)

    - what tank size ?

    - what is cycling, why its needed, how long does it take

    - Ideal water parameters, PH, KH, Cal, Mg, etc etc .... testers, additives......

    - introduction to eqpt and apparatus - refractometer, skimmers, CR, FR, etc etc.

    - Introduction to livestock - various soft corals, LPS, SPS, fishes etc..... and their various specific requirements

    - ** if there are any specific topics that you would like to be covered, you can also drop me a PM.

I would prefer a workshop which covers compatibility and selection of live stocks and corals. Example, broken down into high requirement (Strong lights, low temp), mid requirement (Mid light, average temp) and low requirements (very high tolerance). Any if possible, types of corals commonly found and their feeding requirements, such as manual feed requirements etc. As beginners are very easily falling into the trap of "pretty, buy, die", I believe this will help the beginners avoid unnecessary losses, which are not cheap at all. Just my S$0.02.

So if you are keen, pls indicate your nick here.

Registration (Closing date : 8th june)

  13. Haven tabulate the total cost yet but estimated less than 450 per panel if all bought new :D .

For me, I have salvaged some parts from old or unwanted Plasma/LCDTV at work place and some are left behind from my previous project so the cost should be some where around 280.

    Hi Bro,

Thanks for the reply. Guess I will consider other alternatives for the time being... lol...

Hope the Autosol method did the trick.

    Regards,

    Goondoo
