  2. Firstly, I have some experience, but definitely not all the knowledge you need :P

Secondly, I happen to know a community of UW photographers and attended a few workshops conducted by them.

A good place to go would be Clubsnap, they have a UW sub forum there.

It's been a long time since I last breathe air UW. In fact, I lost most of the pictures over the years after HDD crash multiple times.... These are some pictures I taken with my first UW camera (Or is it second.... can't remember...lol).

nice pics..... what about photos you have shoot without strobes?

  3. The price for their housing will be around the same. Profit margin is not high for them to slash price. Sales volume is also low which explains why they usually ran out of stock and soon, no more in production.

I had seen/heard of reputable brands flooding too. Most of the time, it's due to user fault not properly maintaining the O-rings or installing the ports correctly. There was once I heard the O-ring for one of the buttons failed on a Olympus housing though. Getting a better brand cannot replace user maintenance or user knowledge on what causes flooding.

Macro pictures only. Strobes can't bring out a balance color in wider pictures and most of the time, user have problems adjusting the angles to get the correct lighting.

Photoshop can do wonders. Just Google for "removing blue hue"...... The main reason for using strobes is to be able to shoot at higher shuttle speed and to be able to do that, investments for "TTL" flash etc is necessary. I was using dual slave strobes, its a nightmare.... May need to note that even the most powerful full strobe sets can probably cover a few meters ahead of you... Strobe is also good for fill flash when taking UW portraits shots.

seems like you got all the knowledge and help we can get here dude.... perhaps you can post pics of your dives and give us some comparisons for photos you took without strobes and photos you took with your strobes? ;)

  4. I bought over the 1/4 chiller from a fellow forumer, and placed it in front of my tank. I could have placed inside the cabinet but Im afraid it just generates too much heat when kept inside. In its current position in front of the tank (the rear of the chiller about 45cm away from front of tank), its dissipating quite a fair bit of heat to the surrounding area.

I have an outdoor planter area (its about 4.5m x 1.0m sized area which is sheltered on the top, but not on the sides) with some plants in there. The wife's complaining the heat generated by the chiller is making the living room area warm, so Im thinking to relocate the chiller to this planter area. The other dimensions/ considerations as follow.

    - Chiller is Arctica 1/4hp

    - Dedicated Chiller Pump EHEIM 1262

    - Distance from planter area to tank (8m)

    - Planter Area is separated from living room (where tank is housed) via full-height windows

Off the top of my head, Im wondering if the 1262 provides sufficient flowrate to pump water via the sump across 8m to the chiller and back (roundtrip distance approx 16m?, and including some twists and turns along the way). In the current setup, the eheim is connected directly to chiller, but can see the outflow from chiller is not fantastic. I thought 1262 has flowrate of 3400l/hr? Seems a little underpowered, or the chiller is slowing down the flowrate drastically.

Also Im not sure if i can cut open a hole in the window so that the piping to chiller can go through that hole in the window?

    Anyone has such experience?

i had a 1262 running my 1/2hp artica chiller as well from my previous set up with a fair distance of about 3m from the sump. what i did is from sump run the piping to chiller with the 1262 just about half a meter before the chiller and it works well for me. my whole idea was the 2.5m+ piping from sump becomes part of the sump so as to create little worries for the 1262 to push water to the chiller and out.

and i think we are at the same dilemma now; im setting up my tank at the moment and planning to place the chiller outdoor as well with the rest of my office condenser. issue is when i asked the maintenance guy from artica if its possible to place the chiller outdoor he mentioned as long as it is not directly under the sun or rain its ok.

    anybody can advice?

  5. i would ditch G11 and G10 -- will still opt for the old G9 (if you could get second owned) and canon u/w casings are all good but i'd rely on ikelite casing still for a beginner entry; i've seen manufacturer casings failed too many times (including mine) and i won't let it happen again.

strobes is a good companion for your rig if you want quality pictures and not just a blue hue.....

  6. i'd suggest just get one iwaki 100 pump; tee it off to run your protein skimmer and as return pump. I can't guarantee you that iwaki pump won't fail but chances are unlikely and you dont have to bother about having a reserve pump. keep your setup simple as the more complicated it gets the more chances you will run into problems.

  7. iwaki singapore's retail price is high; i've inquired about an md20 years ago which will cost me a few hundreds.... seen a bro selling his md55 online, you might wanna check it out. in my experience, when it comes to return and skimmer pumps, i'd go for something reliable -- iwaki or eheim..... i did ran my tank before when i was new in reefing with a less expensive return, it died out while i was away. flooded floor and dead livestocks, much more expensive than investing on reliable equipments.

  8. hi reefer guy

nice shots, what camera you used while shooting?

and how much you paid for the package to there?

thanks bro... just amateur shots..... using point n shoot camera, nikon p5600 w/ ikelite casing n inon d2000 single strobes.

package was US$1,250 inclusive of 5d/5n accomodation, 2 dives/day w airtics included to and from Manila.

  9. LemonLemon: thanks!

Might be a long time before I come back though. But I really did enjoy my trip last week. The people are so friendly (except the bus drivers).

    HarlequinMania: I don't know.. they didn't check?

To get out of Singapore you need a CITES permit though. $12 per coral for the permit. 5 maximum corals per person for us non-residents.

Comycus and Ray: Will do, tomorrow when the lights are on. By the way ray, good thing I bought the Supersun. Only 2 polyps left half-closed. The others are already open without feeding!

Pare! didnt know you are a member here as well....... happy reefing....
