Metallic Green Star Polyps Not Opening

I'm currently keeping two mushrooms and one small GSP colony (that opened the day or the day after that I bought it). I bought Metallic GSP about six days ago and it hasn't opened yet. Diatoms are starting to form on the purple mat. What can I do to make it open up as quickly as possible? I've been brushing its surface to prevent build up of stuff. What else can I do? Thank you:)20180708_210219.jpgIMG-20180708-WA0006.jpeg20180708_210233.jpg

Mine took about 10 days to open, they can be stubborn. They will open up eventually. Ensure good water chemistry and keep clearing the diatoms formed up on the gsp.

Thank you:) Is it true that it needs a mature and slightly dirty tank to open up and survive?

Tank must have the right parameters, if thats what u mean by mature, then yes.. slightly dirty meaning more nutrients than required? but if its abt nitrate, its ok to have some amt of nitrate in general (less than 5ppm). Gsp should be easy even with a bit higher nitrate lvl

Diatoms should not affect the opening of the polyps. The only downside to having diatoms is that it’ll compete for nutrients with other living organisms in the tank.

Diatoms form is due to silicates. This is normally the result of using tap water or when you feed your tank too much.

It could be your lighting or flow. Flow too strong, it’ll not open. Lighting too strong, it’ll not open. But if the reason is lighting, then not only will it not open, but over time it will become bleached. Photosynthetic corals will expel zooxanthellae when there is over-photosynthesis. This means when the light is too strong, it will expel zooxanthellae and it turns colour, normally to whitish, known as bleaching.

Keep a look out for it and see how it goes. But for now, what you can do is just monitor the water parameters.

Hi guys just an update, the GSP opened up about a week ago after I did a water change with Coral Pro Salt, when I was using regular Red Sea Reef Salt before. Just info which may help other reefers struggling with the same issue, thanks for the other advice:)

However this does not necessarily mean that the salt was the issue, as I had not done more than 10% water change initially until the diatoms started going away. This time I did a 15% water change with half being Coral Pro and the other half being my regular salt. Additionally I had sold off my Picasso Trigger (though they started opening up some time before I sold him) which may have been a supporting factor. Finally I kept the fan on 24/7 which I realise is actually probably the biggest factor here.
