Holacanthus passer

The Passer Angel is definitely an attractive species that will make for a nice addition to a semi aggressive fish only tank, with other semi aggressive community type fish i.e. Tangs, Wrasse, Groupers etc.. Holacanthus passer, Valenciennes 1846, the King or Passer Angelfish. Juveniles act as cleaners of other fishes. A great, hardy fish for a large marine system.Full size angels should not be mixed with other full size angels, unless it is in a tank of at least 180 gallons. Sometimes referred to as the King Angelfish, the Passer Angel is an extremely territorial Angel that should not be mixed with other full sized Angels. A very hardy species, the Passer Angel is very colorful, especially while a Juvenile. Juveniles are bright oranges with blue and white vertical lines, along with a bright yellowish/orange tail. Both Juveniles and Adults have been observed cleaning other fish in the wild, although the Adults are mainly seen cleaning Sharks.

Maximum Size: the Holacanthus passer grows up to 14 inches.

Minimum Tank Size: The Passer Angel prefers a tank of at least 180 gallons with plenty of places to hide & swim.

Diet: The Holacanthus passer is a omnivore and likes to eat marine algae, mysid shrimp, Spirulina, sponges, and other meaty treats.

Level of Care: The Passer Angel is a medium maintenance fish.

Behavior: The Passer Angel may act aggressively toward other fish.

Water Conditions: Keep water quality high (SG 1.020 – 1.025, pH 8.1 – 8.4, Temp. 72 – 78 F).

Range: Tropical Eastern Pacific, Sea of Cortez, and Galapagos Islands, Central America, Gulf of California to Ecuador, inclusive of the offshore Islands within the range..
