Orbicularis Batfish
Platax orbicularis
| Platax orbicularis (Forsskal, 1775), the Orbiculated, or Round Batfish, is the “ugly-duckling” of the genus as young, being very plain brown and the least tall as a juvenile. The Orbicularis Batfish, mimicking a leaf is one of the more cryptic looking of the Batfish, once it becomes an adult its coloration turns to a silvery gray with two black verticle bars going through the eye, and directly behind the pectoral fins. This Batfish is also one of the species that easily adjusts to the captive environment. This species, like other Batfish species is best kept in a peaceful community aquarium, and will get along with most fish quite well. |
| Maximum Size: the Platax orbicularis grows up to 22 inches. Minimum Tank Size: The Orbicularis Batfish prefers a tank of at least 80 gallons with plenty of places to hide & swim. Diet: The Platax orbicularis is a omnivore and likes to eat variety of foods (meats & veggies). Level of Care: The Orbicularis Batfish is a medium maintenance fish. Behavior: The Orbicularis Batfish may act peacefully toward other fish. Hardiness: This is a delicate fish Water Conditions: Keep water quality high (SG 1.020 – 1.025, pH 8.1 – 8.4, Temp. 72 – 78 F). Range: Indo-Pacific, Red Sea and East Africa to the Tuamotu Islands, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia.. |
