Pterois antennata (Bloch 1787), the Antennata Lion, also known as the Broad-Banded Firefish, is often confused with the volitans species. Antennata lions have strikingly different pectoral fin rays. These fins are long, the thickness of pencil lead and bright white. Also, remember the name Antennata for it’s relation to the black and white antennae (supraorbital flaps) and the six prominent spots on their face. THIS FISH IS VENEMOUS. The pelvic, pectoral and dorsal fins of this fish can cause extreme pain. Severe reactions can occur if allergic. If stung soak injured area in hot water and seek medical attention. |
Maximum Size: the Pterois antennata grows up to 8 inches. Minimum Tank Size: The Antennata Lionfish prefers a tank of at least 30 gallons with plenty of places to hide & swim. Diet: The Pterois antennata is a carnivore and likes to eat variety of live foods (shrimp & fish). Level of Care: The Antennata Lionfish is a low maintenance fish.
