Start salt water tank with tap water

Recommended Posts

Hi community:

I am new reefer and I am seeking your advice.

My tank is very big. The volume is about 350L for display tank and 160L for sump tank respectively.

Although I have RO water filter, the water output is too slow. it will take a few days to produce the amount of RO water I need.

I am thinking is it possible to start water cycling with tap water? Has anybody tried that with good result?

I did this too.. but not sure if it is part of the cycling process or due to the tap water, but i have some algae problem for a month or two. But it is stable now. Another option is to use a NSW which you could buy from LFS to speed things up and save your time and salt

You can try doing this fill your tank with tap water. Run a power head and connect it to a DI reactor in series, let it cycle in your tank.

There you will get your water you wanted.

Who your tank maker?

This is really smart.

I custom made the tank on Taobao, then sea freight shipping to Singapore. 12mm super white glass + shipping, the cost is around $700.

Apart from algae, fishes and corals are healthy. Infact its doing well.

If i were to restart my tank, i would do this method, cycle with NSW. Save my time but other reefer has own preference and opinion. BUT with oil spillage lately, im not sure about the condition and the quality
