  1. Take a look at how bro Ah-lim use a plastic tub in his 2nd chamber for DSB refugium (link below). http://www.sgreefclub.com/forum/index.php?...p;hl=tubberware Just have a bigger 2nd chamber in your IOS to accomodate a plastic tub. It's portable, & you don't have to worry about Mr Murphy anymore.
  2. The return pump that I'm currently using has a removable nozzle at the water outlet (see below pic circle in red). I removed the nozzle & reattached to the pump from the main tank, clamping to the IOS glass partition. You may need to find a replacement nozzle with a longer thread if your glass partition is thick.
  3. I agree with you on the detritus produced in the tank. Especially on a BB like what I have now Stirring up the bottom with an extra wavemaker/pump to encourage detritus extraction to overflow filter is not easy. As a result, I'm contemplating to include an underflow design in my new tank. Has anyone tried this before?
  4. Can provide more detail? Tank dimension : ? x ? x ? Glass thickness : Built-in Overflow to bottom sump? Hood dimension : ? x ? x ? Cabinet dimension : ? x ? x ?
  5. Thanks for the tips Larry. Have never use FR before. Does FOWLR need FR? Only have a bag of carbon & Seachem's PhosGuard hanging in my overflow compartment now.
  6. Sorry for the late reply. Attached is rough sketch of how I get the return pump out of the water. I've BB too. Most reefers opt to have a wavemaker in the main tank to keep detritus off the bottom. I've been thinking how my next tank would also have an underflow to further encourage the extraction of detritus. Do you think it's a good idea? P.S. The return outlet being located mostly on the upper portion of aquariums also helps in O2 exchange due to higher flow of water on the surface.
  7. I've also been thinking about how I can make my next tank a low carbon footprint one. So far, below is what I've come up with: 4 x 1.5 x 1.5 custom IOS design without sump (1) The relatively shallow depth should allow for T5 FL without the use of MH. (2) Smaller return pump as less head pressure is required. (3) No chiller as it's gonna be a FOWLR (4) Basically only 2 pumps running. (1 for return & the other for skimmer) Would welcome any comments.
  8. Hi Firestarter, On the other hand, you can have the hole drilled higher up on the 3rd chamber. My off-the-shelf IOS tank has it this way. I mount my return pump on the hole to : (1) Minimize heat release into the water (2) Minimize pipes (just have a short flexible hose connecting from pump to bottom of 3rd chamber) Have been running it this way for a year. Cheers
  9. T5 may not be lower in terms of power consumption. See below link. http://www.aquamarin.com.sg/productsDetail...uctid=%27406%27
  10. Bought a total of 7 cartons of NTUC distilled water when I first started off. (That was 84 x 1.5l bottles) I find it too siong even with a car. Funny thing is, every time I opened up a fresh bottle to top-up, I can feel money draining into the tank. LOL
  11. Do you mean NSW, as in natural sea water? If so, I'm not sure NSW cost less in the long run.
  12. I bit the bullet & bought myself a Crystal Pro+ water filter. Have not regretted since cause getting clean water is so much more convenient now. There's no excuse not to change water at regular basis.
  13. Hi Big Ben, Below is a shot of my rock work. You think I'm gonna have difficulty using Bro Underwater's method?
  14. Thanks bros. Will give it a try.
  15. Yongshun, BTW, how big is your tank? There's some long term cost involved here.
  16. I use a milk bottle brush on my Weipro collection cup. (. . . and no, there're no babies in my family who's sharing this brush ) I will trim the bristle down a little so that it fits the neck just nicely for that weekly task.
  17. Just came upon this thread that interest me. I find it difficult to siphon out those detritus on my bare-bottom FOWLR even during water change. Does anyone knows if an additional underflow design in the tank will help to extract these unsightly stuff? P.S. I noticed many fresh water tanks have both overflow & underflow design.
