Morgan, I was planing to buy another bulb...sheez I'll try to call them up again and let them check again. I hope its not an LFS who cornered their stock. If they don't have I'll try to find alternative source as I wanted to add another light to my tank.
  2. HDB flats has probably 1500 to 2500 KN/m2 floor loading capacity. Divide it by 9.81 to get the kg/m2.
  3. I thought they sold it..... they were trying to sell it off prior to their move. If it is there in the new shop then nobody bought it. How do you move a glass monster tank to your house without a forklift.
  4. Looks like a heavily bleached trachyphylla geoffrei brain coral. Acclimatise slowly to the light as it might get shocked and die. It probably been left too long in the dealers tank without enough lighting.

Iwasaki 250W 6500K does not require MH ballast and igniter as it has an internal igniter in the bulb all it needs is a mercury vapor lamp ballast. Radium on the other hand requires HPS or MH ballast and 4 KV igniter, 30 uf capacitor is to increase power factor. Morgan , Please note that the Iwasaki 250watt MH lamp requires a mercury vapor lamp ballast and a capacitor only.
  6. I use another pump to push the water into the reactor but you can modify it in such a way that you use gravity to do that. You can hook a hose up into the tank and let the water flow into the reactor and out into the sum. T Use a bigger diameter hose for the input and a plastic air valve on the output to contol the drip rate.
  7. I did manage to grow a 1.5 cm piece of acropora frag to a a multi branch cluster 7. cm high. It's not impossible to grow it and actually growing SPS corals from frags are better as it will grow and adapt its shape to the tank environment.
  8. Next time Reefworld brings in corals from Fiji, I'll give you guys a shout.
  9. So far RO unit is still the tried and true water filter system, wafer fabs uses RO/DI water to produce the ionically pure water to wash the wafers. IF you couple the DI filter that the LFS are selling to the output of the RO unit then yo will produce very pure water almost 99.99% purity. I tried DI unit from the LFS before and found it too costly as the resin beads exhaust itself very quickly if run tap water directly. To maximize its lifespan you need to connect it after the RO unit. Good RO unit can remove 98% of the impurities in the water that means nitrates, silica, phosphates, pesticides and other stuff enumerated by liverock above. Typical RO unit has a 1 micron prefilter, 5 micron carbon GAC to filter the water prior to being processed through the membrane. Newater is produced through the use of multistage RO units.
  10. Wedgee, Yes the JBL unit is an RO unit and I was surprised that the price is reasonable. The 3 stage unit has a prefilter, carbon and the RO unit itself. The membrane should last at least 2-3 years as our tapwater is low in carbonates and other impurities. I'm using a Kent Ro 25 GPD unit for almost 2 years now and the only filter cartridge you need to change is the prefilter and carbon around every 6-8 months. The carbon is very important as it removes the chlorine from the water. chlorine will damage the RO membrane if not removed. My tank has been free from diatoms since I used an RO system. The drawback is that for evry gallon of filtered water it will produce 4-5 gallons of waste water. The waste water actually can be used for washing, flushing or watering the plants.
  11. Go to Keong Seong at Havelock rd. They have a JBL unit selling for about $300. Local companies also sell RO units for home use but their prices are ridiculously high ordering from online shops in the US is cheaper than them.

Phang All my sakis are single ended. E27 for 150w and E40 for 250W one thing good is that you can use it w/out a glass cover.

Not necessarily small as the amount of foam produced requires at least a 3" foam riser tube. My skimmer's overall height is around 26". A bigger reaction chamber is better so that a minimum of micro bubbles is returned.

My tank is 52 x 20 x 20 inches and I'm using a 1 HP chiller. I just finished setting up my radium this afternoon. It looks great in combination with the Iwasaki. I'm thinking of putting in the 400w radium instead of a 250w. If I put in the 400 that means my total wattage would go up 1050 watts ( 2 x 250, 1x150 , 1x 400)... running at 12 hours daily thats around 13 kwh a day or ~400 kwh a month. Jeezz... would cost me $68 a month just for the lighting alone...not counting the pumps and chillers. I better stick to 2 x 150 and 2 x 250.....
  15. My sohal earlier on will only take Julian's sea veggies and refused all other stuffs. No pellet, prawn or anything... He was really a true blue vegetarian till I convinced him that meat taste better than bland veggies...... Now he eats prawn meat with gusto! My tangs loved Sea veggies but its burning a hole in my pocket so I have stopped buying them. Be warned though that I lost a yellow who have been 1.5 yrs with me from seaweed sold in supermarts especially roasted green seaweed used for sushi. I think there is some additive or something in it.
  16. Tanz, Sorry i don't have much $ to spend so have to DIY my own lighting hood... got family to feed....

I'll be adding a 250w Radium 20000K MH lamp soon to my tank. Will see whether it can color up my sps some more.... lighting will consist of 1 x 150w Iwasaki Aqua 1 x 150w 6500K 1 x 250w 6500 and 1 x 250w radium ... will post pic once it's up in 2 weeks time. hmmm or maybe make it 2 x 250 w 6500K and 2 x250w radium 20kk downside will be my electrical bill..

RRbot, How's the skimmer so far is it producing dark skimmate already? Phang, I'm using a Halida 3,000 li/hr pump and the skimmer is producing at least 1/2 cup of dark evil smelling waste every 2 days.... It depends on the size of the reaction chamber whether you can use a more powerful pump or not together with the foam riser tube diameter. The smaller the pump the turnover is also lower but it still beats most skimmers including RSB, TUnze and other small skimmers.
  19. Just go to the national library website and reserve the books. Available : Delbeek & Sprung The Reef Aquarium Vol. 1 & 2 Indo pacific reef guide natural reef aquarium by Tullock etc... Just do a search...
  20. Tanzy, you really spend on your tank! That hood costs at least USD1500 back in the states!
  21. Hon, Look for Hanna instruments at Kallang Junction.
  22. Hi At, Have comb the sand for stell or iron particles. Typically coral sand aare taken from the beach and contains a lot of junk both inorganic and organic. The sand grains also contains some amount of sedimentation , it would be better to wash and rinse it a few times to get rid of the sediments. It is best to rinse it till the water is almost clear before putting it in your tank otherwise it might present some problems later on due to high organic content in the sand.
  23. Why use ozone in the first place? It adds complexity to your tank and more things to monitor. It also presents a threat to your tank if one day you become negligent. The simpler the better, as they say if it can fail it will fail. Reefkeeping should be simple and kept to the basic necessities only IMHO
  24. How big is the foam riser tube it has? H&S and beckett skimmers are 3 inches at least
  25. In the US the norm for SPS reef tanks around 4 x 2 x2 is at least 2 x 250w and the majority with 2 x 400 watts at a distance of around 6 to 10 inches from the water surface. There's no glass cover some more.
